Special Needs Bus Involved in Accident

None of the four special needs students on the bus were injured, according to Clearwater Police.

A car and a bus carrying Pinellas County Schools special needs students crashed near Palmetto Street and Highland Avenue in Clearwater Friday morning.

The front of the bus, which was traveling west on Palmetto Street around 8:23 a.m., hit the driver side of a Chrysler LeBaron, according to Rob Shaw, Clearwater Police spokesman. 

The bus driver, Rogenia Flowers, 53, of Clearwater, ran a red light at the intersection, according to witness statements, Shaw said. Charges against Flowers are pending further investigation.

Carolyn L. Brumfield, 57, of Clearwater, who was driving the LeBaron, was taken to by Bayflite to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Shaw said. She is in stable condition with serious injuries as of Friday afternoon.

None of the four special-needs students who were on the bus were injured, Shaw said.

"The students were on their way to Curlew Creek Elementary," Shaw said. "They were put on another bus and taken to school."
