Police Warn Residents About Craigslist Car Scammers

Clearwater Police are warning residents to use money orders and conduct transactions face-to-face after a couple recent Craigslist scams.

After a couple recent cases involving Craigslist scammers, Clearwater Police are warning residents to use money orders and conduct transactions face-to-face before buying cars online.

"A scam has popped up lately where would-be sellers advertise a car for sale well under value on Craigslist," according to a post on the Clearwater Police Facebook page. "They paint a tale of a relative who has died and they want to get rid of the vehicle quickly. They may ask for only half of the money as a down payment and want you to send them a money order for that amount... The scam comes when you send the money to them and you never get the car."

The scammers also try to use Ebay, according to the post.
