Even Winter the Dolphin Can't Distract Delegates From RNC Business

A special VIP meeting with Winter was pre-empted by RNC business.

RNC business trumped a special viewing of Winter the Dolphin for Florida's delegates. Wednesday's event in Clearwater was supposed to be a carefully planned celebration of the city's most famous resident – a rescued dolphin that has capitvated movie audiences across America. Instead, the gathering at the Harborview Center had scant attendance by the delegates. Most of the delegates were at the Convention working on business that had been postponed due to Tropical Storm Isaac. The Florida delegation "got called at the last minute to attended a 2 p.m. meeting" in Tampa, said Florida delegate Carol Dover of Tallahassee, who came to Clearwater regardless. "I just could not resist." What was supposed to be a packed house of Florida GOP …

Winter’s Dolphin Tale Adventure Looks to Grow

City leaders are expected to confirm a rental agreement of the first floor of the Harborview Center for storage space for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Winter’s Dolphin Tale Adventure exhibit at their work session meeting Monday.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s downtown presence is expanding. At least that is what officials there hope. City leaders are expected to confirm a rental agreement of the first floor of the Harborview Center for storage space for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Winter’s Dolphin Tale Adventure exhibit at their work session meeting Monday. The 5,314 square foot space on the ground floor includes the former Pickles Plus Too restaurant. City manager Bill Horne approved the lease but it still is subject to confirmation and approval of the City Council as required by the City Charter. Aquarium officials requested to lease the space to store supplies related to the Winter’s Dolphin Tale exhibit. The 12-month lease is expected to start when …

Five Things to Know Today: Monday, July 16

Know where the red light cameras are running, what city council is talking about, who the Threshers are playing and more going on in Clearwater, July 16.

  1. Weather: Yes, the rainy season is here. Expect a 50 percent chance of the wet stuff, up to a half inch, according to the National Weather Service. It might not be a bad idea to carry an umbrella. 2. Cheap gas: The price of a gallon of regular gas seems to be inching up but that does not mean you have to over pay. Start the week off right with a tank of the cheapest gas around. Fill up for $3.19 a gallon at Chevron, 1285 S Highland Ave., according to tampagasprices.com. Check our "Commute" tab for more gas prices and real time traffic updates. 3. Traffic: Red light cameras are running in Clearwater. The grace period before $158 tickets are sent to violators ends July 31. The cameras are set up at these intersections; eastbound Gulf to …

Experience a Hurricane at Clearwater Marine Aquarium

The latest attraction at Winter's Dolphin Tale Adventure, Hurricane Experience, is a walk through exhibit featuring recreated Dolphin Tale movie sets and the Category 1 Hurricane Leroy.

The lights flicker. Lightning flashes. Thunder claps. The howl of wind comes through windows. There is rain and the popping from a downed power line is ear rattling. Walk down the hallway, where drywall along the ceiling is broken. The floor rocks slightly back and forth, an aluminum lawn chair comes close to crashing through the half boarded up window. Weather team analysts warn about flooding and former news anchor Jenn Holloway warns that Hurricane Leroy is making landfall at Clearwater Beach and the weather phenomenon, featuring the thunder and lightning, is unlike anything seen since 2005. "Stay away from the windows," Holloway says. The screen flashes to a radar map and Holloway continues talking: "It is too late for you to evacuate…

Pickles Plus Deal Sours

City leaders are set to talk about changes to the nearly $700,000 settlement with Pickles Plus Too that would allow the deli to stay in the space at the Harborview Center an additional three months.

City leaders are set to talk about changes to the nearly $700,000 settlement with Pickles Plus Too that could allow the deli to stay in the space at the Harborview Center an additional three months. While city officials would be looking to recoup some of the $6,549 a month payout to the deli, attorneys for the restaurant are asking for the current terms to stay in place. If the deal is worked out, it would keep the deli open Feb. 29 to May 31 so restaurant officials can negotiate a lease on another downtown location, according to a Dec. 13 letter from Pickles Plus Too attorneys to the city. However, the City Council would have to approve any changes to the settlement which paid $688,000 for the deli to leave its lease nearly eight and half…

Aquarium Deal for Harborview Center Done

The cost to prepare the shuttered Harborview Center for the arrival of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is even less than anticipated.

Well, it just got cheaper for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to take over the Harborview Center. The actual cost for crews to bring the second floor of the shuttered building up to code shrunk another $70,000 since work started in mid August. And that final cost plays a role in the monthly rent in the lease agreement that the city council unanimously approved at its meeting Thursday. The city hands over the keys Nov. 1. "I think it's a win-win for the city and downtown," Mayor Frank Hibbard said. The costs including to renovate walls, fix ceiling tiles, clean and repair the air conditioning system and inspect the fire alarm and sprinkler system is $107,700. Officials recently estimated the costs to be $172,587, still far less than the $1 …

Coachman Park Committee Cool With Aquarium Plan for Harborview Center

Some criticism has surfaced about impacts on traffic at Island Estates and downtown development because of the aquarium's plan to use the Harborview Center as an attraction annex.

A group looking to expand and enhance Coachman Park is fine with a city plan to rent the Harborview Center to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium despite complaints. Some criticism surfaced about impacts on traffic at Island Estates and downtown development because of the aquarium's plan to use the Harborview Center as an attraction annex. The Coachman Park Enhancement Committee, formed in February, is working on a feasibility study, to be ready in February 2012, that examines park elements, structures, programming, management and funding. The group plans to get public comment and feedback on concepts during the study period, said Howard Warshauer, a member of the committee. Warshauer is fine with the plan that could see the aquarium moving …

I had a call the other day from a woman who lives out of state. She knew about the aquarium wanted to know where in Tampa Bay the aquarium was. I had to explain that Tampa Bay is a regional name for the area which surrounds the bay. Tampa is on one side while Clearwater is on the other. Because of Winter and the aquarium more people all over the world now know that Clearwater exists. After the …   more ›

Clearwater Marine Aquarium Coming to Downtown

Under a plan between the city and aquarium an overflow facility for the attraction would be located in the second floor of the Harborview Center.

What happens when too many people are coming to your business and an expansion for it is on the way, but not coming soon enough because, oh yeah, a movie is set for release within a month that will bring in even more people? If you are the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, you go to City Hall. The city and aquarium leaders are working out details that would create an overflow facility in the second floor of the shuttered Harborview Center that could potentially bring nearly 200,000 people to downtown. The deal could be approved at the city council meeting Thursday. “I think this is good for downtown,” Mayor Frank Hibbard said. “This is an opportunity we have to take advantage of with the film.” In the last few weeks, the aquarium and the city …
