Learn How to Raise Your Own Chickens

A new urban farming conference at the Pinellas County Extension will explore backyard farming.

Ever considered raising chickens in your backyard or growing your own food? A new urban farming conference will share everything from backyard farming to raising crops for local markets. The one-day event is Saturday, Feb. 9 from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Pinellas County Extension at 12520 Ulmerton Road, Largo, according to a media release. While raising chickens is allowed in unincorporated Pinellas County, it is banned in Clearwater. The cost is $7.50 for the morning or afternoon session, $12 for the full day. Register by phone at (727) 582-2100, option 2 or online. Space is limited. Backyard Chicken Proposal Up for Vote

Palm Harbor residents and people living in other parts of unincorporated Pinellas County would be allowed to raise chickens in their backyards if county commissioners approve a proposal.

We should find out Tuesday night, if a proposal to allow backyard chickens has ruffled any feathers. A group called Pinellas County Citizens for Backyard Poultry wants Pinellas County Commissioners to approve a proposed ordinance that would allow residents to raise chickens on their property.  Residents could keep up to four chickens in areas where raising poultry is banned. All chickens would be required to be kept in coops and roosters would not be allowed. Chickens are already allowed in agricultural areas of Pinellas County and in some cities including Dunedin, Gulfport, Largo, St. Petersburg and Belleair.
