TXT Tips to CPD Through Android App

Clearwater Police launched an app for smartphones that use the Android platform.

Clearwater Police first launched an app for tipsters to send in anonymous information from their iPhonein 2011. There were more than 890 tips sent through the Tip411 software to police. That information led to, or helped with, 21 arrests including cocaine, marijuana and prescription medication seizures. Building from that success, the department is expanding with a similar app for smartphones using the Android platform. "This mobile app alleviates time and technology barriers. Anyone can send us information - including pictures - whenever or wherever that person chooses," said Clearwater Police Chief Anthony Holloway in a release. Red Cross Launches Hurricane Safety App

Hurricane season is in full effect and the American Red Cross is looking out for areas, like the beaches, that are prone to natural disasters.

The Tampa Bay chapter of the American Red Cross announced the release of its new app this week. The hurricane safety app is complete with pre-storm tips as well as post-disaster instructions. Another bonus is the "I'm safe" option, which allows residents to send a notification to loved ones, with the push of a button. Lifesaving features are included in the app, from shelter locations to a tool kit that includes a flashlight, an audible alarm and a strobe light. The app is free and is the second in a series to be created by the American Red Cross, for use on iPhone and Android platforms.
