On Veteran's Day, the state of Florida and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officially made changes to commercial licensing requirements. The changes, according to the FWC, will make it easier for Florida veterans and veterans with disabilities to enter the commercial fishing industry. “We have a tremendous opportunity not only to give thanks to the men and women that served our nation so courageously, but also to provide them with more support so they can pursue careers in fishing here in Florida," said Florida Gov. Rick Scott. "This initiative will expand job opportunities for our veterans and get more folks involved in the commercial fishing industry, which is a win-win for Florida.” FWC officials said the changes …

How Did Veterans Day Begin? Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. As Veterans Day 2012 fast approaches, Clearwater Patch would like to take a moment to say thank you to our local veterans who have served the community and our country so proudly. City offices, libraries and recreation centers are closed in observance of Veterans Day Monday, Nov. 12. There are no changes to the city's trash collection schedule.

As people across America recognize men and women who have served in the armed forces, students in Clearwater's public schools will be in the classroom. All Pinellas County Public Schools are open Monday, Nov. 12, the national observance of the holiday. Most government offices in Pinellas are closed. Pinellas' public school students won’t have to wait long for some time off, though. Schools will be closed the week of Nov 19-23, for two days of professional development for teachers and for Thanksgiving break, according to the school district’s calendar. Thank you is not enough to express our gratitude. Many of my uncles served in ww2 &the Korean conflict plus the Vietnam era ..we can take time to volunteer @ vet hosps or just take the time with a relative or friend that has served this country.   more ›
