A portion of Sunset Point Road near the Edgewater Drive neighborhood will be closed to traffic Friday. The westbound lane of Sunset Point Road between Edgewater Drive and Douglas Avenue is closed to traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1. There are about 4,840 cars that travel that part of the road daily. A flagman will be present to direct traffic during the construction, which includes asphalt work as part of a reclaimed water piping expansion project. The road was closed for crews to repair utility pipes in October. It was closed for a month as crews work to add a reclaimed water line through the neighborhood in February, 2012. Questions? A two vehicle crash at the intersection of Sunset Point and Belcher roads sent two drivers to the hospital, one with serious injuries Sunday evening.

(Jan. 28) A two vehicle crash at the intersection of Sunset Point and Belcher roads sent two drivers to the hospital, one with serious injuries Sunday evening. A preliminary investigation determined a van crossed the median at 6:58 p.m., according to Clearwater Fire and Rescue. Firefighters worked to extricate the driver, who was transported with serious injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was transported with non-life-threatening injuries, according to investigators. More details will be reported as they become available.

A 26-year-old man riding a scooter suffered life-threatening injuries after trying to pass a turning vehicle early Sunday morning at Sunset Point Road and Stevenson Avenue, police said.
A 26-year-old man riding a scooter suffered life-threatening injuries after trying to pass a turning vehicle early Sunday morning in Clearwater. Tasha M. Kelly, 21, and Katie F. White, 19, both of Clearwater, were traveling westbound on Sunset Point Road in a 1990, four-door Plymouth. Kelly tried to turn left onto Stevenson Avenue around 1:11 a.m. when Gregory Allen Hitchcock, who was riding a 2009 Aprillia scooter, tried to pass her at the intersection. Instead, Hitchcock hit her driver side door and was ejected from his scooter, according to Clearwater Police. Hitchcock, 26, was not wearing a helmet. Updated, 5:10 p.m. A school bus was involved in a three-vehicle crash Friday morning at Sunset Point Road and World Parkway, but the five McMullen Booth Elementary School students and two aides aboard were not injured, according to Clearwater Police. The 60-year-old bus driver experienced a "medical issue" and passed out as he was heading west on Sunset Point, according to a preliminary investigation, public safety spokesperson Elizabeth Watts said in a media release. The bus crashed into a white Kia SUV and then a Toyota Camry. "Fortunately, the bus was traveling at a low rate of speed," Watts said, although the damage to the Kia "does look significant."
