Brown Boxer Expanding to Countryside

The popular beach bar is opening its third location in the Countryside area in early May.

Jay Thomas is looking to fill a void. Thomas, an owner of the popular Brown Boxer beach bars, is taking the concept to Countryside with the latest location, expected to open in May. "This area does well," Thomas said. "We’re looking to fill a void, just like the beach." Brown Boxer already has locations at Clearwater and Madeira Beach. The Countryside location is in a former T.G.I Fridays near Enterprise Road and U.S. 19. It features outdoor seating and inside, TVs are plastered on virtually every inch of the walls around the large, rectangular bar. There will be live music most nights and the restaurant’s signature fare will be available until 3 a.m., Thomas said. "That’s what we do, have fun," he said. Brown Boxer, Countryside 2611 U.S. …

Hey Ryan - Urbanspoon's rankings are done not just on the percentage of favorable ratings by their users (whether they "like" a restaurant or don't "like" it) but also by actual written reviews by critics and diners. It's a combination of all of those.   more ›

Clearwater Mexican Restaurant Reopened After Failing 3 Food Inspections

Find out why this restaurant was forced to temporarily close three times in March.

A Clearwater Mexican restaurant has reopened after it failed three food inspections last month, online records show. Taqueria del Valle, 2140 Drew St., was temporarily closed three times in March because of violations found during routine inspections by the state's Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Inspectors on March 18 found three "high priority" violations, including eight live roaches in a bag of to-go containers on a shelf in the kitchen and more than 20 in a cooler used to store some food items. They also noted seven "basic" violations. The violations were enough to order the restaurant to be closed while staff worked to correct violations. The restauarant was ordered temporarily closed again March 19 and a third …

‘World’s Most Unusual’ Dollar Store? You Be The Judge

The East Bay Drive emporium makes a bold proclamation. But does it live up to its name?

Dollar stores are about as common as the strip malls they inhabit in this area of Florida.  So it takes something extra to stand out amid the sea of discounted toiletries and party decorations.  Welcome to the World’s Most Unusual Dollar Store and More, a veritable unique- gift emporium located on East Bay Drive in Clearwater, just a few hundred yards from U.S. 19.  With a name like that, Patch felt like the place was asking for some investigating to see if what’s inside the massive store lived up to the hype on the front facade. And from what we saw, the "world’s most unusual" boast was backed up.  Packed to the rafters with items ranging from wedding cake toppers to Chinese ninja stars, the store truly has something for everybody, …

What Would You Like To See Replace Irish Pat's?

The spot at 6250 Ulmerton Road has been home to numerous establishments over the years. With the property now vacant, we want to know what you would like to see there.

The building at 6250 Ulmerton Rd. has been home to a number of restaurants over the last dozen years, including sports bars, seafood shacks, a couple of "breast-aurants" and no fewer than three Irish pubs. In the past two years alone, the 2,800-square-foot building at the intersection of U.S. 19 in the Largo-Clearwater area has housed two such pubs, O'Boobigan's and Irish Pat's Bar & Grill. But with Irish Pat's having closed its doors recently, the spot is now available again. And according to an employee of the property owner, T.L. Hunt, Inc., the reason for the turnover is twofold. "It's a great location, but some people don't know what it takes to run a successful restaurant," Katie Goff told Patch by phone. "That place has been very …

Obstacles in Opening Downtown Club Resolved

After Angelo Proestopoulos shared his experiences trying to start a business in downtown Clearwater's Cleveland Street District, he says the Loft opens this weekend.

Angelo Proestopoulos is a new business owner trying to open in downtown Clearwater's Cleveland Street District. He sunk about $70,000 into creating "The Loft," a Miami-style club in the space of the former Atrium martini bar, he said in a Letter to the Editor on Clearwater Patch. And after a meeting with city officials recently, he says the Loft opens this weekend.  "...We did what they asked so we can open," Proestopoulos said in an email. "We will be doing soft open this weekend." Bill Horne, city manager, said in a comment posted with Proestopoulos' Letter to the Editor that the Jan. 28 meeting was to get the project back on track. "For all concerned, Angelo used unlicensed contractors to get his building ready for occupancy and use. …

ATM Violation Surprises Downtown Pizza Shop Owner

Bledar "Tony” Starova was surprised to find out about a code violation regarding an outdoor ATM machine through comments made by Clearwater Mayor George N. Cretekos this week.

The ATM has been at Tony's Pizzeria for years. It was only two months ago, however, that it was moved outside along the sidewalk on Clearwater's Cleveland Street to make it more convenient for users, owner Bledar "Tony" Starova said. “I didn’t think it was a big problem,” he said Wednesday in front of the controversial cash machine. And two days after comments by Mayor George N. Cretekos about the machine being a violation of city code during Monday's Community Redevelopment Agency meeting, Starova was having it removed. "It irritates me when a member of the Downtown Development Board is blatantly ignoring a rule and an ordinance of the city of Clearwater and is just violating our own ordinances even though he has been warned repeatedly to…
