Gulf-to-Bay Intersection to Close for Roadwork

The intersection was scheduled to close Tuesday and Wednesday nights to allow for road construction, as part of the U.S. 19 expansion project.

The intersection of Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard at U.S. 19 was scheduled to close Tuesday and Wednesday nights to allow workers to erect steel girders, according to the Department of Transportation. The road is being closed from 8:30 p.m.-6 a.m. as crews install girders that will be part of a widened U.S. 19 bridge deck span over State Road 60. The construction is part of the U.S. 19 expansion project from north of Whitney Road to north of State Road 60. This major construction project consists of: The detour for the closure is:   1.) westbound traffic turning north at the northbound Frontage Road to Drew Street, west to Belcher, south to Gulf-to-Bay, east/west at that point depending upon destination to either westbound on Gulf-to-Bay or …

Dimmitt Drive Could Come to US 19

City leaders vote on renaming 1st Avenue North to “Dimmitt Drive” as a way to let the dealership's customers know when to exit when a US 19 expansion project is complete.

What do you do when a major road project is going to affect your business? If you are a legacy car dealer in Clearwater along US 19 you get the name of the 546 foot intersecting road changed to in effect advertise your business. City leaders vote on renaming 1st Avenue North to “Dimmitt Drive” reflecting the expansive car dealerships that abut US 19 at their meeting Thursday. “Due to a limited number of exits, existing and potential new customers of the Dimmitt dealerships will have to know to exit US 19 much further south out of sight of the dealerships,” according to a letter from Timothy Powell, representing Dimmitt. For years now work to widen the road has caused headaches for drivers. The latest project is expected to smooth the north…

Last vehicle I bought from them had the title doctored. I didn't find this out until several years later when I went to sell the car. I guess that's the way business is done, profitability by any means necessary. Used to be a good customer, the 4th car I bought from them was my last. Dirty dealings at Dimmitt.   more ›

Lane on McMullen Booth Closing for Railroad Repairs

A southbound lane on McMullen Booth Road near the railroad tracks will be closed for crews to work on a section of a concrete transition panel.

A lane on one of the heaviest-traveled roads in Clearwater will be closed starting Thursday morning. The southbound center lane of McMullen Booth Road near the railway crossing just south of State Road 590 will be closed at 9 a.m. until CSX and county crews can inspect and repair a concrete transition panel next week. Bolts between the concrete and the wooden railroad ties below keep coming loose on one of the panels, said Peter Yauch, Pinellas County director of traffic.  "There are concrete panels that basically bridge the gap betwee the rails and the end of pavement," Yauch said. "For some reason, the bolts keep coming out." The lane should be reopened before the end of next week, Yauch said.  "We don't expect any major traffic backups…

Changes on U.S. 19 Might Not Come Soon Enough

Regardless of plans to lure development to the commercial corridor, business owners worry continued changes to the road will drive them out of business.

Kathleen Bromley is torn. She creates stained glass at The Stained Glass Studio of Clearwater along U.S. 19, and has for about 30 years. Bromley remembers the last time expansion came to one of the area's most dangerous roads, when the overpasses at Countryside Boulevard and State Road 580 were added. It nearly broke her. “I’m a very visual business,” Bromley said. As a Clearwater resident, she wants the faster-flowing road to connect to other parts of the Tampa Bay area.  As a business owner, though, she wonders: “How long will I be able to do this?” Project Manager Sees U.S. 19 as a Regional Hot Spot Bromley and about 30 other residents and business owners went to an open house last week to hear what consultants have put together based …

Residents Share New Ideas for U.S. 19

An online survey seeks ideas for future development and land use along U.S. 19. Preliminary results will be shared with city leaders Monday.

The U.S. 19 Innovative Places website was developed for residents and business owners to share their ideas for future land use and development along the commercial corridor.  The study area is defined by Gulf to Bay Boulevard, Drew Street and North McMullen Booth Road and is divided into five segments including the Countryside Activity Center, the Gulf to Bay Activity Center, the Sunset Point and Coachman District, the Belleair District and the “in between areas.”  The study sought recommendations dealing with land use, design, sustainability and economic development impacting property fronting U.S. 19 from Belleair to Curlew roads. Planners will share ideas taken from the survey, which was open from March 5 to May 12, at the City Council …

Cleveland Streetscaping Complete, But What’s Next?

Merchants applaud the beautification project but wonder when new business will come to the area.

Tony Saydi is thrilled the construction equipment is gone from the front of his sub shop, as customers can finally enter his parking lot without navigating a minefield of debris.  But now that the 15-month, $2.9 million Cleveland streetscaping project is finally complete, the owner of Mr. Submarine is asking when new business is going to follow the new plantings and sidewalks to the area.  “We’re glad it’s over. It looks nice. But our business is the same,” said Saydi, who has been in the location at the corner of Cleveland Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue for 23 years.  “I wish the city would listen to us," he said. "If they would put a sign at the corner of Gulf to Bay … directing people to the beach through downtown, maybe more …

Mayor Meets With Concerned U.S. 19 Merchants

George Cretekos told owners of the A&N Deli to “be patient” during construction.

While waiting for George Cretekos to show up at A&N Italian Deli on U.S. 19, Mario Pierluca openly hoped the Clearwater mayor didn’t miss the entrance to the parking lot.  It turns out those fears were unfounded — Cretekos, who is a native of the area, found the place just fine on the first try.  But that has not been the case with many motorists since the construction on a new overpass began in the area around the deli more than two years ago. Pierluca cites a 40 percent drop in revenue since the project began as proof that fewer people are stopping at his family's shop.  A&N Hopes to Shine Light on U.S. 19 Problems By attending neighborhood coalition meetings, contacting elected officials and simply asking the mayor if he would care to …

U.S. 19 Construction Project Curbing Local Business

The multimillion-dollar, multi-year overpass project has been costly to merchants located along the construction corridor. A phase to add the overpass lanes at Gulf to Bay Boulevard starts Monday and is expected to last through July.

If you polled the average Clearwater citizen, most would probably agree that the latest streamlining of U.S. 19, which encompasses a 2.7-mile stretch from Gulf to Bay to Whitney Road, is a necessary byproduct of the massive increase in traffic in Pinellas County over the past 20 years.  But if you ask some of the merchants whose livelihood depends on visibility and accessibility in that area, they will tell you the project, which began in November 2009 and is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2014, has been a financial nightmare.  A phase to add overpass lanes at Gulf to Bay Boulevard starts Monday and is expected to last through July. Traffic will converge into two lanes between Seville Boulevard and Drew Street. Clearwater Patch…

Merrill is correct! I have been here in Fl. since 1971 and NOTHING has changed in the way the DOT "accomplishes" their projects. It is politics as usual. Before the project is near completion it will be obsolete. They probably use the cheapest materials (cut corners) so they will always have a reason to be "fixing" something they should've done right to begin with. That's how you keep union …   more ›

Portion of McMullen Booth to Close

The southbound lanes of McMullen Booth Road will be closed for repair work on a concrete panel at the railroad tracks Wednesday night. The road should be open in time for rush hour traffic Thursday morning.

The southbound lanes of one of the heaviest-traveled roads in Clearwater will be closed Wednesday night but should reopen in time for rush hour traffic Thursday morning. Crews from CSX Transportation and Pinellas County will be repairing a concrete panel at the railroad crossing on McMullen Booth Road. The panel serves as a transition from the railroad tracks to the road. There is an ABBA tribute band playing at 8 p.m. at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Because of that, the work will start at 8:30 p.m. The southbound lanes of McMullen Booth Road south of State Road 590 are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. Southbound drivers will be detoured at State Road 590 to U.S. 19 and back along Drew Street. Drivers can access the Bayshore Bridge shopping plaza from …
