The money pays 219 officers for working more than 16,600 hours in Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Tampa during the Republican National Convention, according to city records.
Clearwater Police will be reimbursed more than $470,000 for the use of hundreds of officers who worked thousands of hours in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties during the Republican National Convention. The 219 officers worked 16,607.4 hours in Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Tampa during the convention, which was Aug. 27 to 30. That averages out to almost 76 hours for each officer. “The hours worked during the week of the RNC have been approved,” Steven King, administrative support manager at Clearwater Police, wrote in a Dec. 13 email to Police Chief Anthony Holloway. “That is all of the information I have right now, and I just wanted to pass along the good news.” Clearwater city officials expected to see an increase in vehicle traffic …

Local delegates Alison Bereke Marano and Shannon Love said the Republican Party is doing a great service to Obama campaign by being ignorant.
Florida delegates attending the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., talked politics with South Carolina Patch Political Editor Shawn Drury on Monday. Last week, Ann Romney and Condoleezza Rice made an appeal to women voters during last week's Republican National Convention in Tampa. Alison Bereke Morano and Shannon Love talked about what President Barack Obama needs to do to reach out to women voters and to win their votes. "The Republicans are doing a great service by being so ignorant," Morano said. "And by showing their disregard for women and what they think we are actually about." Morano is the vice-chair of the Florida Democratic Party and lives in Pasco County. Love said that she didn't feel the gap in female voters …

The public art exhibit, The Pod at Pier 60, is on display through Sept. 4.
Labor Day weekend is your last chance to see Clearwater's Dolphins, The Pod at Pier 60. The public art exhibit, which features 70 individually designed, 6-foot-tall dolphin sculptures in the Pier 60 Park on Clearwater Beach, will be up until the evening of Sept. 4. After that, sponsors decide where to display or donate their individual dolphins when they leave the park. The pod started with 50 dolphins and then continued to grow after they were put on display, with another 20 arriving. The locations of all 70 dolphins once they leave the park will be indicated on a Dolphin Pod Trail map, according to a City of Clearwater spokesperson. The dolphins have been on display throughout August, including during this week's Republican National …

Many visiting the area for the RNC packed Clearwater beach hotels, but they are spending their money elsewhere, not in local eateries or watering holes.
Businesses along Clearwater Beach braced themselves this week not just for Tropical Storm Isaac, but for the mass of Republicans arriving for the RNC. Isaac passed by and so, too, did the RNC visitors, though the Republicans are staying here. What local business officials had hoped would be a packed beach was sparsely populated on a beautiful Thursday afternoon. It has been that way all week, said Liz Lajoy of the Clearwater Beach Chamber of Commerce. Influx of business "has not been as much as we expected," Lajoy said. On the morning of the last day of the convention, Lajoy isn't sure business will pick up. Officials are crossing their fingers that some of the hundreds who did stay at Clearwater-area hotels stick around for the long Labor…

Fed up with problems from RNC-provided buses, the Republican Party of Florida hired a charter bus company to transport its delegates.
The Republican Party of Florida is hoping delegates will have a smoother ride for the rest of the convention, now that the organization has chartered a bus company to provide transportation. On Tuesday, delegates were late to the opening day of the Republican National Convention because RNC-contracted buses were not sent to pick them up. Then the delegates were stuck on buses for hours Tuesday after the convention ended for the evening. "It was an absolute mess up," said Florida delegate Pat Fahey of Daytona Beach. Fahey did not arrive back to Palm Harbor's Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club until after 3 a.m. Wednesday. "Nobody knew where the buses were located when we came out of the convention. Everybody was sending us to a different place. …

Jacquie MacDonald rented out the kitchen of Sweet Caroline's bakery in Palm Harbor, so she and her team could fulfill a large order of more than 15,000 baked items for the Republican National Convention.
We've all probably baked a couple dozen cookies. How would you feel about baking more than 15,000 items? That's the tall order received by Jacquie MacDonald, owner of Jacquie's Smart Foods, a company that bakes health-conscious treats. MacDonald's baked goods are sold at Fit Life Foods, a new company that sells "grab and go" health-conscious, pre-packaged meals and snacks at its stores, including the Clearwater location on McMullen Booth Road. Fit Life Foods is supplying the Republican National Convention with snacks, which is how Jacquie got the big order. Over the past few weeks, MacDonald, of Dunedin, rented out the kitchen of Sweet Caroline's bakery in Palm Harbor, so she and her team could fulfill the large order. MacDonald does not …

They’ll have to make a 15-minute hike to the convention tomorrow.
First they were left without transportation from Palm Harbor’s Innisbrook Resort to the Republican National Convention in downtown Tampa. Then they were stuck on a bus for hours following the convention Tuesday night – not making it back to the resort until after 3 a.m. Wednesday, according to TBO. Now, Florida’s Republican delegation is facing a 15-minute hike from the security perimeter to the convention as officials try to straighten out the transportation problems facing the state’s top GOPers. "The (Republican National Committee) needs to fix this bus problem … We need to take care of our delegates," TBO quoted Adam Putnam, Florida’s agriculture commissioner as saying. “It was a complete breakdown.” According to TBO, the Republican …

A special VIP meeting with Winter was pre-empted by RNC business.
RNC business trumped a special viewing of Winter the Dolphin for Florida's delegates. Wednesday's event in Clearwater was supposed to be a carefully planned celebration of the city's most famous resident – a rescued dolphin that has capitvated movie audiences across America. Instead, the gathering at the Harborview Center had scant attendance by the delegates. Most of the delegates were at the Convention working on business that had been postponed due to Tropical Storm Isaac. The Florida delegation "got called at the last minute to attended a 2 p.m. meeting" in Tampa, said Florida delegate Carol Dover of Tallahassee, who came to Clearwater regardless. "I just could not resist." What was supposed to be a packed house of Florida GOP …
