Countryside Proves Too Strong for St. Petersburg

The Cougars didn't seem to miss a beat from last year's stellar season in whipping St. Petersburg on the road in both teams' spring game.

ST. PETERSBURG – Last year both Countryside and St. Petersburg ran the regular season table undefeated, proving to be two of the better teams in the state. A few months later, despite both teams losing quite a few valuable players to graduation, it seemed as if the same Countryside team that took the field last season was playing in Friday’s spring game. The Cougars jumped out to a 42-6 lead at halftime and coasted to a 49-19 win in which the fourth quarter featured a running clock. Cougars quarterback Gray Crow and running back Diomi Roberts were two big reasons for the lopsided score. Crow threw for 207 yards in the first half with four touchdowns. He connected on passes of 66, 24, 27and 15 for scores, twice hitting tight end A.J. …

A Quick Glance at This Fall's High School Football Schedule

The FHSAA released its master high school football schedule for this fall's season recently. Look at which Clearwater schools have a tough road or a potential skate to a good season. Mark those calendars now.

The Florida High School Athletic Association released its master football schedule for the 2011 season, including all four Clearwater high schools recently. A quick breakdown of each school's schedule: Calvary Christian High School Someone is in good standing with a higher authority at Calvary Christian. The Warriors open the season with four consecutive home games - 40 percent of the schedule, and six of their first seven games. If Calvary Christian was ever going to make the playoffs, this could be the year. Many of the schools on the schedule have slipped in recent years including Indian Rocks Christian, Shorecrest Prep, Northside Christian and Keswick. If ever there was a favorable schedule for the Crusaders, this is the season. …

Ayanna Andrews Uses Speed to Kill Opponents

The Countryside High School softball center fielder uses speed to lead the Cougars on offense.

Ayanna Andrews is getting close to a certainty - when on base it's inevitable she will try to steal. The Countryside High School softball centerfielder is this area's softball answer to baseball's Ricky Henderson. A gifted hitter and a very intelligent young woman, Andrews knows she has something that few others can match - speed. As a result, she tries to use it to her advantage. "I like to steal," Andrews said matter-of-factly at a recent practice, "Especially if I have the opportunity." Given her prowess at hitting, Andrews gets plenty of opportunities. In 44 at-bats, Andrews has racked up 24 hits for a .545 batting average. She has two home runs, four triples and a pair of doubles. Despite leading off, Andrews also has 10 RBIs. Oh, …

Unlikely Clearwater Tornado Player Records Rare Baseball Feat

Reed Avers, a sophomore utility player for the Clearwater Tornadoes, racked up three hits in one inning earlier this season in a lopsided win over Gibbs.

Reed Avers is, for now, an average high school baseball player hoping to land a steady gig as a starting infielder. Or outfielder. Or anywhere his coach Ken Clawson will place him in the lineup. But recently in a game against Gibbs, Avers accomplished something not only did he not envision reaching, but none of his teammates or coaches can recall ever seeing. In the first inning Avers, who batted second in the Tornadoes lineup, had three hits, two RBIs and scored two runs. "I've dreamed of a lot of things but to get three hits in an inning, nah, I never thought of that," Avers said. "I've never heard of this, not even in Little League." The feat was so impressive to Avers, a sophomore, he couldn't ever remember getting two hits in an …

Countryside's Gray Crow Says Intangibles Led Him to Miami

Countryside quarterback gets his choice of college out of the way, partially thanks to his work ethic.

Gray Crow is something of a legacy at Countryside High School. His brother, L.D. Crow, was one of Countryside's best quarterbacks and eventually found his way to Stanford where he played for the Cardinal on then-coach Jim Harbaugh's first season. Crow, who will be a senior this fall at Countryside, is like his older brother: a savvy, smart, hard-working pro-style quarterback with a big arm.  Like his older brother, he too will play Division-I football. Unlike his older brother, Gray Crow will attend classes at the University of Miami not this fall, but next year. While Miami is where Crow will go, playing for Countryside very nearly didn't happen. Crow, who last season threw for 1,254 yards completing 103 of his 194 attempts for eight …

Clearwater Foiled by Andres Sanchez's Buzzer Beater

Northeast star forward Andres Sanchez's buzzer beater shot off a rebound caps a 10-point late rally, ending Clearwater's season in a crushing loss.

The Tornadoes led by 10 points with 2:21 to play in a Class 5A boys basketball region quarterfinal. Northeast appeared to have walked into Clearwater's trap. Clearwater coach Allen Carden was substituting liberally. Northeast, which has no bench of note, appeared gassed. One starter had fouled out. Two other starters had four fouls, including star forward Andres Sanchez, arguably the best player in Pinellas County. Tornadoes fans were already setting their schedule to attend the next Clearwater game. But Northeast didn't just come off the ropes, the Vikings came off the mat. Northeast rallied to tie the game late, then Sanchez swooped through Clearwater defenders to grab an offensive rebound and in one motion, unloaded the ball as it …

Calvary Christian's Kyle Weidinger a Force in Local Basketball Circles

The 6-9 center transferred to Calvary Christian after his sophomore season and was largely a nondescript player. Now, Kyle Weidinger is one of the better players in Pinellas County.

When Calvary Christian travels to Kissimmee New Dimensionsto begin the Class 2A playoffs in a region quarterfinal today, the focal player on the court for both teams will be Kyle Weidinger.  The 6-9 center for Calvary Christian has become a force in local basketball circles. In fact, his true success has become a bit of a surprise to him. Earlier this month he scored his 1,000 point to become the first basketball player from Calvary Christian to reach such a plateau. Thing was, he wasn't aware of it until he nearly had 1,000 points. "I never thought about it until a few days before it happened," Weidinger said. "My mom had come up to me and she said she had totaled it all up and I had 900 and something. I thought, 'Wow, wait a minute.'" …

Clearwater Rallies Late to Upset Boca Ciega, Advance

Clearwater High School's girls basketball squad won an emotional, roller coaster-type of game to come within one win of a state tournament berth.

Sophomore Alex Alford sank all four of her free throw attempts in the final 49 seconds helping Clearwater upset Boca Ciega 46-43 Tuesday at Gulfport in a Class 5A region semifinal. The win by the Tornadoes pulls Clearwater within one win of a state tournament berth and a state semifinal game.  It was an emotional, roller coaster type of game in which Clearwater first looked to rout Boca Ciega, then should have lost the game only to come back from the dead to win late. "We knew this would be a war but we knew we could play," Clearwater coach Tom Shaneyfelt said. "We got such a great start that Boca Ciega had to climb out of that hole so far it took a lot out of them." Alford sank a three-pointer midway in the third for a 25-14 lead. Boca …

Clearwater High School Girls Basketball Coach Deflects Credit For 600 Wins

Tom Shaneyfelt is more impressed with the former players he helped get college scholarships than the number of wins he has racked up.

With region basketball play about to begin this week for girls teams across the state, most coaches are looking forward. Clearwater High School girls basketball coach Tom Shaneyfelt took a moment to be reflective. "I really never anticipated coaching as long as I have," Shaneyfelt said. "One season ends and then you come to the next and pretty soon you have a total of 25 years. Not a lot of guys coach that long. I've never really thought much about that." Shaneyfelt's thoughts of memory lane were sparked with him talking about recent milestone no other area girls coach has accomplished.  In the final week of January, Shaneyfelt won his 600th game as a local girls basketball coach. And Shaneyfelt has no burning desire to hang up his whistle…

Hall of Fame Basketball Coach in Wisconsin Makes Impact in Clearwater

Pete Olson, known better around local basketball circles as "King," nears the end of his 17th season as a volunteer assistant boys basketball coach at Clearwater High School.

In Wisconsin, Pete Olson is a pretty big fish in a medium-sized pond.  In Clearwater, Olson is a small fish in a small pond, but with a pretty large impact. That's just fine with the 17-year volunteer Clearwater High School boys basketball assistant varsity coach. Olson, 76, a retired high school teacher and basketball coach from Wisconsin, is in two sports Halls of Fames in his native state, for basketball and fishing. Eight months a year, Olson -- better known as "King" -- can be found on the waters of Boulder Lake near his home of Boulder Junction, which the locals brag is the musky capital of the world. It's so far north it's only a quick jog to the shores of Lake Superior and residents of Boulder Junction have to travel south quite a …
