Guckian the Voice of Threshers Baseball

Some 40 years ago, Don Guckian began keeping the scorebook for Clearwater Central Catholic boys basketball games. It indirectly launched him to a three-decades stint as the voice of Phillies minor league baseball in Clearwater.

Players and coaches come and go each season at Bright House Field. It is home of the Clearwater Threshers and the High-Class A Florida State League affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. But there is more of a fixture at the stadium than the cheesesteaks sold behind home plate. It's the voice of Don Guckian. A native of the Rochester, NY area and a local resident since 1962, Guckian has been the public address voice of the Phillies’ Clearwater farm team since 1989. And it started thanks to basketball. Guckian coached two sons of then-Clearwater Central Catholic basketball coach Nick Cavallaro, who, on a whim, asked Guckian to keep the basketball book at home games. Spring Training

Phillies vs Blue Jays Preview

There are only a couple Spring Training games left.

Catch the Phillies and the Blue Jays in a battle of the Kyles at 1:05 p.m. today.  After all, there are only a couple of Grape Fruit league games left. Right-hander Kyle Kendrick gets the start for the Phillies, according to Major League Baseball. And the Blue Jays will send top prospect Kyle Drabek to the mound. The Blue Jays (13-12) are three games back of the Grapefruit League leading Phillies (18-11).
