County Commission to Vote on Transit Tax

Pinellas County Commissioners will vote on whether or not to place a sales tax for transit improvement on the November 2014 ballot at its Feb. 26 meeting.

Pinellas County Commissioners took the next step Tuesday to ensure there is a public vote on a sales tax increase in November 2014 that would go toward Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority improvements.  By voting 6-1 Feb. 12, commissioners cleared the way to decide at their Feb. 26 meeting whether or not to place the proposed sales tax increase on the 2014 ballot. The vote, however, is a mere placeholder until an ordinance is drafted for the PSTA sales tax referendum.  "For more than 30 years, we having been talking about transit," said commissioner Janet Long. "We have never gotten as far as we are right now. In my mind, it’s time to move forward. Our citizens deserve better and our kids deserve better."  The tax can be up to one percent…

PSTA on Pace to Break Annual Records

Last month, the transit agency provided 1,238,666 rides, which is more than any other August in agency history.

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority is on track to break its all-time annual ridership record this fiscal year, according to a PSTA news release. The transit agency provided 1,238,666 rides, last month, which is more than any other August in agency history. That’s 10 percent jump over August 2011, and the ninth monthly mark set by PSTA within the last 10 months, according to the release. “Truly remarkable,” Brad Miller, PSTA CEO, said in a news release. “When Tropical Storm Isaac came around we were worried that the storm would keep many of the Republican National Convention visitors from venturing out. This record ridership shows that visitors and many locals opted for public transportation.” According to PSTA, like all government …

Girl Scouts Fix Up Bus Stop

Girl Scout Troop 858 fixed a bench and added landscaping to a bus stop along Sunset Point Road in Clearwater, earning a Bronze Award for their efforts.

Clearwater has a newly refurbished and landscaped bus stop along Sunset Point Road thanks to a troop of Girl Scouts. "The girls got together to discuss community projects that they could undertake to earn a Bronze Award,” said Scout mom Sharon Akers-Tower. “One of the girls noticed that the bench was broken at this stop, which is close to our meeting venue. She suggested that the team fix and beautify the stop and the others agreed.” The stop is just east of US 19 and served by PSTA’s Route 62.  The bronze award is the highest honor given to Girl Scout Juniors, who are Scouts in fourth or fifth grade. The first step in earning a Bronze Award requires the scouts to form a team to explore their community and develop ideas for an enhancement …

PSTA Continues to Set Ridership Records

“Not only is this the highest ridership ever for the month of May, but it’s also the second highest monthly total ever for PSTA – second only to March 2012,” said Bob Lasher, PSTA spokesman, in a news release.

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority continues to set all-time ridership records. Early figures for May indicate that 1,187,231 rides were taken last month, which is a jump of more than 46,000 rides over May 2011. “Not only is this the highest ridership ever for the month of May, but it’s also the second highest monthly total ever for PSTA – second only to March 2012,” said Bob Lasher, PSTA spokesman, in a news release. Agency leaders say transit ridership typically jumps when fuel prices spike and, as in past years, they’re seeing that when prices come down, riders continue using PSTA. Gas in Clearwater has fallen sharply since March by dropping nearly 30 cents. This past week the average gallon of gas in Clearwater was $3.26 while …

Jolley Trolley Adding App, Circulators A Possibility Too

Big changes are coming to the Jolley Trolley including a mobile app and possibly adding a circulator service.

Bob Longenecker spent three years looking for just the right vehicle. It had to be safe and it had to provide the ability for anyone, regardless of disability, to board. Longenecker, the president of the Clearwater Jolley Trolley, has worked for months on a plan to bring “circulator” buses to help ferry potential passengers to bus stops or destinations. The idea is to increase ridership by making it easier to get to riders. “We just think there’s some real advantages to this,” Longenecker said. He plans to start taking the plan to transportation officials this month, while agency officials are heating up budget discussions.  There’s An App for That Longenecker said a Jolley Trolley mobile app is also on the way.  Users will be able to see …
