Local Author Reaches Out to Military Kids

A Tampa Bay area author and former military threat analyst helps the youngest members of military families cope with deployment and injury.

Memorial Day gives us pause to honor those who have given their lives to protect our freedom. But there are others who make tremendous sacrifices for us, as well: the children of those heroes. When a soldier is deployed, the effect on his or her family can be profound. When that soldier is injured or killed in combat, it can be devastating. A Tampa Bay area author and former U.S. Central Command threat analyst has written two picture books to help military children cope with a parent's injury and take pride in the work they do. Pinellas Parks Offer Plenty this Memorial Day Weekend

The upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend is a perfect time for friends and family to take advantage of 20,000 acres of Pinellas County parks and Florida landscapes.

Wanna stay close to home this holiday weekend?  Pinellas County operates three large beach parks on the Gulf of Mexico. In Clearwater, Sand Key Park has almost a half mile of beachfront. Fred Howard Park has white sandy beaches and is located in the northern part of the county in Tarpon Springs. Fort De Soto Park, located in the south end of the county, is one of the largest county parks in the state of Florida, with more than seven miles of shoreline. All county parks provide parking, restroom facilities and drinking fountains. They are open daily from 7 a.m. to sunset. Gas Prices Drop for Memorial Day Weekend

Falling gas prices could have more people hitting the road this holiday weekend.

Do you plan to kick off the summer with a Memorial Day weekend road trip?  Falling gas prices could have more people hitting the road this holiday weekend. Prices have dropped steadily over the last 45 days and they're expected to drop even more, according to AAA Auto Club. "Motorists will get the much needed relief at the pump just in time for the Memorial Day weekend and will likely lead to an increased number of travelers, helping to jump start the summer travel season," said Jessica Brady, AAA spokeswoman, The Auto Club Group. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Tampa Bay area is $3.45. VFW Sets Sights on Recruiting Younger Members

The veterans organization is focusing on bringing Iraq and Afghanistan soldiers into the fold.

The longtime image associated with VFW posts is one of dark, smoky halls filled primarily with veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, swapping old stories and drinking beer while the rest of the world passes by unnoticed outside. But local VFW chapters, responding to a direct initiative from the national headquarters, are starting to break that image by upgrading existing facilities and encouraging younger members to join.
