School Board Approves Elementary Rezoning Plan

Boundary changes for Belcher, Sandy Lane, Leila Davis, Ponce de Leon, McMullen Booth and 22 other elementary schools will take effect in the 2012-13 school year.

An elementary school rezoning plan designed to stabilize school populations across the county was unanimously approved Tuesday evening. School leaders say the changes are intended to relieve crowding at some schools while taking advantage of room at others. The rezoning plan will affect more than 2,100 students at 27 elementary schools.   The 6-0 vote came after Pinellas County School Board heard from a dozen parents who voiced a variety of concerns. The public discussion was set for 7 p.m. to allow parents who work during the day to participate. Jack Redding has two daughters who attend Plumb Elementary in Clearwater. "It seems like every time they turn around, you're talking about rezoning," he told school board members. "They say it's…

School Rezoning Up for Final Vote Today

Students at five local elementary schools would be affected if the school board approves boundary changes for 2012-13.

Clearwater students at Leila Davis, McMullen Booth, Sandy Lane, Ponce de Leon and Belcher elementary schools would be affected if the rezoning proposal is approved. At a preliminary hearing Nov. 8, Leila Davis parent Robert Lasher was among two dozen parents who spoke out against the plan. "I want to protect my child more than anything because he's where he loves his school, he gets awards all the time during their pep rallies, and he's very proud to be there," Lasher said. District officials say the changes are necessary because of crowding at many county …
