Pinellas County Schools earned a "B" in new 2010-11 school rankings from the Florida Department of Education. Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Manatee counties in the Tampa Bay area were all graded "B" school districts. Sarasota County received an "A." The rankings are based on points derived from FCAT scores and other factors. A fifth-grade student at Leila G. Davis Elementary placed second in a statewide poster contest to warn about the dangers of radon gas. Nathaniel Briseno's "Radon: It's Life or Death" was one of two second-place winners out of nearly 400 contestants in the 2012 Florida State Radon Poster Contest. He will be honored at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the school, 2630 Landmark Drive. The winning art will be posted on the Florida Department of Health's website. Winners also are entered into a national contest for a chance at $1,000. Last year the top state winner also won the national contest. An elementary school rezoning plan designed to stabilize school populations across the county was unanimously approved Tuesday evening. School leaders say the changes are intended to relieve crowding at some schools while taking advantage of room at others.
