Clearwater Red Light Cameras Spy More Than 1,000 Violators in August

The city issued 1,145 tickets in the first month of using the red-light cameras, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Drivers in Clearwater were ticketed more than 1,000 times last month at three local intersections with red-light cameras — including more than 800 at the intersection of Gulf to Bay Boulevard and Belcher Road, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The city issued 1,145 tickets in August using the new cameras, according to the Times' story. The breakdown: Those tickets come with $158 fines — although the city will collect less than a third of that. The state receives $100 of every ticket, and the city must split their revenues with the Arizona company that installed and maintains the cameras, the Times reports. Clearwater pays Redflex Traffic Systems $13,000 a month. Red Light Camera Fines Start Tuesday in Clearwater

The 30-day warning period for red-light cameras at busy Clearwater intersections officially ends at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, meaning violators will now be fined $158.

Smile! If you're running a red light in Clearwater, you could be on camera, and starting Tuesday it'll cost you. The 30-day warning period for red-light cameras at three Clearwater intersections expired at midnight Monday, meaning that as of Tuesday, July 31, a violation will carry a $158 penalty. The cameras are set up at these intersections: The city approved a measure to add the cameras for a six-month trial program back in November, and the cameras went live July 1. The cameras record traffic each minute, every day of the week, taking pictures and video of red light runners. The images are sent to Clearwater Police to review, and then a citation is mailed to the vehicle owner.  So far in July since the cameras turned on, at least 557 …

A study showed that traffic signals increase accidents e.g. people look at the lights and not the traffic. After lobbying the city a company placed a red light camera in Chillicothe, OH. After the 6 month trial it was removed minus any refund on my $138 ticket? I understand that in these hard times the state must have its tax somehow comrades.   more ›
