East Gateway residents have a grocery store. An area some consider a food desert because of a lack of grocery stores now has a few options for fresh food items. The Clearwater Save A Lot recently opened in the Cleveland Plaza. The grocery chain has more than 1,300 locations nationwide since opening in Cahokia, IL, more than 35 years ago, according to information from its website. The store is in the same plaza as Nature's Food Patch. While the natural and whole foods store has been in the space for more than 25 years, the store does not necessarily cater to the area's many financially strapped neighbors. Residents, city officials and business owners listened to a plan for redeveloping the East Gateway District into a walkable, livable part of downtown.
Shelly Kuroghlian is impressed with the vision for the East Gateway District and is committed to see it through. “I want this to be the hip place,” Kuroghlian said. “Because there is no hip place in Clearwater at all.
