The two Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are pool mates now and for the foreseeable future at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
The story is out of a Hollywood script. An injured, female, two-month old Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin is rescued with little chance of survival, but with perseverance does. Sounds like Winter’s story. But five years and a day from her rescue, while crews wrapped up the filming of Dolphin Tale, another dolphin came to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Hope. The two became poolmates Thursday where they will be seen together for the foreseeable future. Mildred Helms Elementary is the recipient of "Flo," one of Clearwater's Dolphins sponsored by Clearwater Gas System. The six-foot-tall fiberglass dolphin will be on display at the school for the next few years.
The "home of the dolphins" is about to be home to at least one more. Mildred Helms Elementary School in Largo is the recipient of "Flo," one of Clearwater's Dolphins sponsored by Clearwater Gas System. A special VIP meeting with Winter was pre-empted by RNC business.
RNC business trumped a special viewing of Winter the Dolphin for Florida's delegates. Wednesday's event in Clearwater was supposed to be a carefully planned celebration of the city's most famous resident – a rescued dolphin that has capitvated movie audiences across America. Instead, the gathering at the Harborview Center had scant attendance by the delegates. Most of the delegates were at the Convention working on business that had been postponed due to Tropical Storm Isaac. Sure, the rescue and rehabilitation work the Clearwater Marine Aquarium does for waterborne animals is well known. But they also have been fowl friendly for years. Ricky and Lucy, Afrcan Great White pelicans that played the role of Rufus in the movie Dolphin Tale, will now be living at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
There is no doubt that moviegoers fell in love with the true star of Dolphin Tale, Rufus. Now Clearwater Marine Aquarium guests will have the opportunity to meet the actual birds who played the role. Ricky and Lucy are African Great White Pelicans that will be calling the aquarium home. The birds are seven years old and can live well into their 60s. They were trained in California before they came to Clearwater to shoot for the blockbuster hit Dolphin Tale. This was not their first experience working in front of a camera as they were also used for the movie Zohan starring Adam Sandler. Nearly 30 children with a special connection to Winter the Dolphin or the movie made about her can got the chance to meet an actor from Dolphin Tale Wednesday. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium offered children a chance to meet Cozi Zuehlsdorff who played Hazel Haskett in the movie about the tail-less dolphin. Participants wrote a 200 to 500 word paper describing how they were inspired by Winter or the movie Dolphin Tale. The winners are:

Levi Larochelle came out of his shell the day he swam with Winter the Dolphin. His mother Kimberly never saw her son smile like he did that day on June 26, 2010. Levi, 11, has Aspergers Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder that causes him to have a seemingly isolating, emotionally vacant and acute focus on things that interest him. But all that melted away when he got in the water with Winter. For the first time, Kimberly saw him smile. Hugs. Kisses. The emotions just poured out.
