Drunk and buzzed drivers beware: Authorities will be looking for you this weekend in Clearwater. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and Clearwater Police Department will conduct a joint sobriety checkpoint this weekend near Clearwater High School. Deputies will stage the checkpoint at the high school, at 540 S. Hercules Ave., beginning at 10 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday. They'll be diverting eastbound traffic from State Road 60/Gulf to Bay Boulevard in an effort to catch drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs, the sheriff's office said. Law enforcement agencies across the state are launching special “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdowns to stop impaired drivers and to save lives on Florida’s roadways through Jan. 1, 2013. Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies made one arrest and issued a citation during a sobriety checkpoint Friday night at a Kmart on U.S. 19, according to officials.
Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies stopped nearly 200 vehicles — making one arrest and issuing a citation — during a sobriety checkpoint Friday night at the Kmart parking lot near U.S. 19 and State Road 580 in Clearwater. Deputies arrested and charged one person with no valid driver license, two counts of misdemeanor possession of marijuana and a count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell. Deputies also issued one citation. At the checkpoint, community policing, K-9 and narcotics deputies diverted 194 vehicles looking for alcohol and drug impaired drivers. Miriam Harrell was on the way home from dinner with friends March 20, 2004. Less than two miles from her home, Harrell, 76, who was seated in the backseat of her friend's car, was hit by an impaired driver. Instantly, she was killed. Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies will be on the lookout for drug- and alcohol-impaired drivers.
Law enforcement officials will be setting up a DUI checkpoint Friday night on Ulmerton Road in an effort to keep the roads safe from drunk drivers. The sobriety checkpoint will be set up at the National Aviation Academy, 6225 Ulmerton Rd., from 10 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said in a media release. The sheriff's office sets up monthly checkpoints at various locations throughout the county. Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies and Clearwater Police issued 35 citations, impounded 17 cars and arrested 14 drivers for DUI, during a checkpoint Friday night at Clearwater High School. Officers diverted 489 vehicles through the checkpoint from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. in the parking lot at the school which is along busy Gulf to Bay Boulevard. Pinellas County sheriff's deputies plan to conduct a sobriety checkpoint at Clearwater High School Friday night.
Harold Davis and Jason Hennis died after an impaired driver hit the motorcycle the two were riding Aug. 19, 2008. Clearwater Police investigated, arresting and charging Jimmy Dunn, who had a history of DUI arrests. Dunn was found guilty of DUI manslaughter and is serving 40 years in prison, according to state records. As a memorial to Davis and Hennis, Pinellas County sheriff's deputies plan a sobriety checkpoint at Clearwater High School Friday night. Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies will be on alert looking for drivers under the influence countywide Friday night.
Sheriff Bob Gualtieri promised more wolf pack patrols. In addition to monthly DUI checkpoints, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is also using the enforcement technique in an effort to identify and remove impaired drivers Friday. The countywide operation will be going on from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday.
