Five Questions With Former CCC Baseball Star Jeff Campbell

Clearwater Central Catholic grad Jeffrey Campbell won numerous awards and accolades following his first year at the University of North Dakota.

Jeffrey Campbell, a Clearwater Central Catholic product who earned an athletic scholarship to the University of North Dakota following his senior season with the Marauders, recently completed a spectacular freshman season with the Fighting Sioux.  Campbell, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound. first baseman/pitcher, was named to Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman All American team following a season in which he hit .326 with a team-leading 12 home runs and 47 RBIs. He also hit 14 doubles and two triples, won four games as a pitcher, and was the only Fighting Sioux player to start all 56 of the team's games.  In addition to becoming the first North Dakota baseball player to be named to a Division I All American team, Campbell was named the Great West …

CCC Marauders Top Countryside in Epic Championship Game

The Cougars come up with a huge sixth inning but CCC held them off to capture the championship at the Dunedin Spring Classic.

They both deserved to be there. Countryside knocked out River Ridge. They then edged East Lake and soaked the Spongers.  Clearwater Central Catholic battled through a marathon 15-inning game with Pinellas Park . Then they smoked St. Petersburg in five innings.  Next, they proceeded to knock out red-hot Tampa Catholic. The collision between the two teams in the final game at the Dunedin Spring Classic Saturday went like a heavy weight fight but the Marauders took the win 7-6. “They’ve done this all season, come up with big innings in the clutch,” Countryside coach Kemo O'Sullivan said. “Our pitching leaked a little bit and our defense let us down a little.” Both teams drew blood in the first inning; Countryside off a Kiefer Sullivan double …

Marauders Sack Saint Petersburg

Riding the crest of their 15 inning victory over Pinellas Park, the Clearwater Central Catholic Marauders come out and crush the Green Devils in five innings 11-0.

St. Petersburg pitcher Dylan Bennedict got through the first inning just fine, striking out three batters. However, after fanning Jeff Campbell, Bennedict walked the next three. Ray Fox got an infield hit after the ball was overthrown trying to get a force out at the plate. It was déjà vu all over again, when Eric Simone got the same result during his at bat. A wild pitch and another throwing error, sent the game to 4-0 to start the second inning. A full frame game was not necessary as Clearwater Central Catholic, who is riding the crest of a 15 inning victory over Pinellas Park, crushed the Green Devils in five innings 11-0 Friday at the Dunedin Spring Classic. The Marauders smelled blood in the water. They came right after Bennedict in …

CCC and Pinellas Park Marathon Baseball Game Postponed Yet Again

The drama continues as inclement weather is partly the culprit behind denying a victor in this, so far, 15 inning game.

Add this up: 15 innings, 37 strikeouts, 6 different pitchers and 117 plate appearances. And what you get is the action so far in one game of the Dunedin Spring Classic. The Clearwater Central Catholic Marauders and the Pinellas Park Patriots are locked in combat for more than 24 hours. Their 8 p.m. game Tuesday night went well past midnight. It wasn't until the end of the 14th inning before the game was postponed. Well, the rain was back Wednesday and the teams will have to wait another day to play. Depending on how long the game goes tomorrow or if weather postpones it yet again, the contest will have officially been open for 45 hours.  The Dunedin Spring Classic is a tournament, there is no way to call it a draw. Were it a regular season…

Baseball Fans Get Set for the 2011 Dunedin Spring Classic

Every year, the Toronto Blue Jays sponsor the prestigious tournament that features 13 teams from Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties.

The Dunedin Falcons would love to repeat as champions at the 42nd annual Spring Classic. Last year, they overcame a seven-run deficit in the seventh inning to snatch the championship away from East Lake. Many of those players man Dunedin’s current roster. The annual tournament starts today (March 28) and runs through Friday (April 1) at the Englebert Complex, 1700 Solon Ave in Dunedin. The tournament hosts thirteen different teams across three different ball fields with winners and losers moving into different brackets. The list of competing teams include Dunedin, East Lake, Clearwater Central Catholic, Pinellas Park, Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor, Countryside. Here’s a look at some area teams and how they fit into the tournament: …

Clearwater stays hot, beats rival Clearwater Central Catholic

The Tornadoes win for the fifth time in six games; CCC drops to 2-5.

When they met in the season-opening Diamond Classic a month ago, both Clearwater and Clearwater Central Catholic were searching for direction heading into the regular season. Clearwater was trying to incorporate a slew of underclassmen into the lineup while waiting for key players to return from the basketball team, while CCC was dealing with injuries that forced longtime manager Todd Vaughan to use a couple of practice squad players in the tournament. But ever since splitting a pair of games in that preseason series, the clubs have been headed in opposite directions. The Marauders dropped four of its first six games, all in nail-biting fashion, with every game being decided by one run. Clearwater, meanwhile, rebounded from a 2-2 start to …

Clearwater Central Catholic Hopes Pitching, Defense Carries Baseball Squad in Early Games

The Marauders have a talented yet inexperienced team that CCC coach Todd Vaughan is easing into specific roles.

Clearwater Central Catholic has long been a state powerhouse and seemingly has always had a stud pitcher or two. And if the Marauders are again to complete for a run to the state tournament, it appears judging from early results CCC is going to have to lean on its pitching. "That's what we hope for," CCC coach Todd Vaughan said at a practice earlier in the week. "We don't have any real bombers in the lineup any more. We have age but not a lot of experience." Last year CCC was both loaded and had a logjam, good players who may have started on other teams couldn't with the Marauders. Instead, these talented players had to wait their turn. How quickly they adapt to varsity baseball, high level varsity baseball, may determine how quickly CCC …

Diamond Classic Baseball Tournament Helps Two Clearwater Teams Prepare for the Regular Season

The preseason event, hosted by Clearwater Central Catholic, provides a competitive platform to kick start the season.

With basketball and soccer playoffs in full swing throughout the area, and the weather of late leaning more towards nor’ eastern than true southern, it’s difficult to remember that spring is right around the corner. But this weekend, at Clearwater Central Catholic’s Marauders Field, it got a little easier to imagine days full of warm temperatures, green grass and watching games played on a diamond, not a court or a field. The Diamond Classic preseason tournament is the brainchild of longtime CCC Coach Todd Vaughan. He came up with the idea about a decade ago as a way for area teams to prepare for the upcoming baseball season.  “I’ve always just kind of set it up that we just had a set schedule, never ‘winners win (and advance), losers lose…
