Northeast star forward Andres Sanchez's buzzer beater shot off a rebound caps a 10-point late rally, ending Clearwater's season in a crushing loss.
The Tornadoes led by 10 points with 2:21 to play in a Class 5A boys basketball region quarterfinal. Northeast appeared to have walked into Clearwater's trap. Clearwater coach Allen Carden was substituting liberally. Northeast, which has no bench of note, appeared gassed. One starter had fouled out. Two other starters had four fouls, including star forward Andres Sanchez, arguably the best player in Pinellas County. Tornadoes fans were already setting their schedule to attend the next Clearwater game. But Northeast didn't just come off the ropes, the Vikings came off the mat. Northeast rallied to tie the game late, then Sanchez swooped through Clearwater defenders to grab an offensive rebound and in one motion, unloaded the ball as it …

The 6-9 center transferred to Calvary Christian after his sophomore season and was largely a nondescript player. Now, Kyle Weidinger is one of the better players in Pinellas County.
When Calvary Christian travels to Kissimmee New Dimensionsto begin the Class 2A playoffs in a region quarterfinal today, the focal player on the court for both teams will be Kyle Weidinger. The 6-9 center for Calvary Christian has become a force in local basketball circles. In fact, his true success has become a bit of a surprise to him. Earlier this month he scored his 1,000 point to become the first basketball player from Calvary Christian to reach such a plateau. Thing was, he wasn't aware of it until he nearly had 1,000 points. "I never thought about it until a few days before it happened," Weidinger said. "My mom had come up to me and she said she had totaled it all up and I had 900 and something. I thought, 'Wow, wait a minute.'" …

Tom Shaneyfelt is more impressed with the former players he helped get college scholarships than the number of wins he has racked up.
With region basketball play about to begin this week for girls teams across the state, most coaches are looking forward. Clearwater High School girls basketball coach Tom Shaneyfelt took a moment to be reflective. "I really never anticipated coaching as long as I have," Shaneyfelt said. "One season ends and then you come to the next and pretty soon you have a total of 25 years. Not a lot of guys coach that long. I've never really thought much about that." Shaneyfelt's thoughts of memory lane were sparked with him talking about recent milestone no other area girls coach has accomplished. In the final week of January, Shaneyfelt won his 600th game as a local girls basketball coach. And Shaneyfelt has no burning desire to hang up his whistle…

Pete Olson, known better around local basketball circles as "King," nears the end of his 17th season as a volunteer assistant boys basketball coach at Clearwater High School.
In Wisconsin, Pete Olson is a pretty big fish in a medium-sized pond. In Clearwater, Olson is a small fish in a small pond, but with a pretty large impact. That's just fine with the 17-year volunteer Clearwater High School boys basketball assistant varsity coach. Olson, 76, a retired high school teacher and basketball coach from Wisconsin, is in two sports Halls of Fames in his native state, for basketball and fishing. Eight months a year, Olson -- better known as "King" -- can be found on the waters of Boulder Lake near his home of Boulder Junction, which the locals brag is the musky capital of the world. It's so far north it's only a quick jog to the shores of Lake Superior and residents of Boulder Junction have to travel south quite a …
