Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri Defeats Scott Swope

Gualtieri, appointed interim sheriff in 2011, easily beat Democratic challenger Scott Swope in Tuesday's election.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri easily defeated challenger Scott Swope on Tuesday. With 299 of 299 Precincts Reporting, Gualtieiri won 59.24 percent to 40.45 percent.  "It’s a great night and a culmination of 18 months of a lot of hard work by a lot of people." Gualtieri told a cheering crowd of more than 500 at the Hilton Carillon on Tuesday night.  Gualtieri was appointed interim sheriff by Gov. Rick Scott in November 2011, after Jim Coats retired from the job. He beat former Pinellas Sheriff Everitt Rice in a contentious Republican Primary Election in August. Gualtieri singled out the heated primary race as tough, along with the last two months of campaigning against Swope.  He said the "significant" margin of victory means the …

Hi there! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I'm getting fed up of Wordpress because I've had issues with hackers and I'm looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform http://jualeigeronline.blogspot.com/ and http://jualrumahgayungsari.blogspot.com…   more ›

Scott Swope Concedes to Bob Gualtieri in Pinellas Sheriff Race

Democratic challenger Scott Swope called Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and left a message telling him to "do good for these next four years."

Democratic challenger for Pinellas County Sheriff Scott Swope thanked volunteers, supporters and friends at the VFW in Dunedin shortly after conceding to incumbent Bob Gualtieri in Tuesday's election. Swope called Gualtieri and left a message telling him to "do good for these next four years." Swope made the call after 85 percent of the vote was in favor of the incumbent. This is "the end of a 14-month journey that has been very, very strenuous, time consuming and expensive," he said. Swope received more than 205,000 votes but trailed Gualtieri by more than 20,000 votes with nearly all precincts reporting. Swope called the campaign a "David vs Goliath" battle from the beginning and is proud of the votes he earned. "I am rejuvenated in my …

Sheriff's Showdown Highlights Primary Election in Pinellas

Pinellas County voters go to the polls Aug. 14 for the Primary Election to decide the Republican nominee for sheriff as well as other state and local offices.

Pinellas County voters will go to the polls Tuesday for the Primary Election. The race between interim sheriff Bob Gualtieri and former sheriff Everett Rice is drawing local interest. The two veteran law enforcers are in a battle to be the GOP nominee for sheriff in November's general election. Rice, 67, was Pinellas sheriff from 1988 to 2004 prior to serving in the State Legislature and working as an attorney. He seeks to oust Gualtieri, appointed sheriff by Gov. Rick Scott last November, after Jim Coats retired. The two squared off in several forums this summer, including a Patch-sponsored debate July 17, at the Unitarian Universalists Octagon Arts Center in Clearwater. The winner in Tuesday's primary will face Democratic challenger …

Letter to the Editor: Gualtieri vs. Rice, a Horse Race? Not Quite

One more big difference between a horse race and the Pinellas County sheriff’s race is that betting on your favorite horse doesn’t affect the outcome of the race. Your vote for the right person does.

A lot may be said for comparing a tight political race to a horse race. There seems to be enough likeness between the two contests to allow for a plausible analogy. So let’s look at some of the more obvious similarities; competitors don’t necessarily enter the starting gate on an equal basis. For the moment, we’ll discount age as a factor in horse racing since horses are usually matched closely by age because it’s unfair to run a young horse full of energy against an older steed whose legs have grown a bit shorter with time. What we really want to look at on our racing form at the running of the 2012 Pinellas County Downs Sheriff’s Stake is recent past performance. We’re going to place our bet on the competitor that has shown the best …

Gualtieri Vs. Rice Takes Center Stage at Sheriff Candidates' Debate

Interim Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and challengers Everett Rice, Scott Swope and Greg Pound squared off in Tuesday night's debate. But it was Rice and Gualtieri, who stole the show as they vie for the Republican nomination.

While there were four candidates participating at Tuesday night's Pinellas County Sheriff debate in Clearwater, much of the event centered on the two men vying for the Republican nomination for sheriff. Interim Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and former Sheriff Everett Rice traded barbs throughout much of the evening on each other's record, campaign fliers and future issues.  Democratic nominee Scott Swope was involved in most of the major policy discussions, while write-in candidate Greg Pound was largely ignored after responding to most questions with nearly the same answer.  Candidates were asked about immigration, open-carry laws, combating pill mills, homelessness, the budget and special interest groups.  Gualtieri, appointed to his current …
