Clearwater Beach in Running for Best Florida Beach Town
The USA Today poll is based on "Dr. Beach" Stephen P. Leatherman's favorite beach destinations in Florida.
Yes, that is Clearwater Beach at the top of Dr. Beach's rankings, kind of. Stephen P. Leatherman, a coastal expert and professor at Florida International University, routinely rates and ranks the state's top beaches. He recently was tapped to give his 10 favorite beaches that combine sand, surf and a welcoming sense of community, for a USA Today poll. The other beaches include Cocoa Beach, Key West and Siesta Key. The beaches were listed alphabetically, leaving Clearwater Beach the top spot in the poll. "Meet 'volleyball heaven' on the Gulf Coast, with 'some of the best girl- and boy-watching I've ever seen' near Pier 60," Leatherman said to USA Today about Clearwater Beach.
