Clearwater stays hot, beats rival Clearwater Central Catholic

The Tornadoes win for the fifth time in six games; CCC drops to 2-5.

When they met in the season-opening Diamond Classic a month ago, both Clearwater and Clearwater Central Catholic were searching for direction heading into the regular season. Clearwater was trying to incorporate a slew of underclassmen into the lineup while waiting for key players to return from the basketball team, while CCC was dealing with injuries that forced longtime manager Todd Vaughan to use a couple of practice squad players in the tournament. But ever since splitting a pair of games in that preseason series, the clubs have been headed in opposite directions. 2011 Big East-Big Ten Challenge a Hit With Fans From All Over the Country

Clearwater hosts ten teams at two venues on a spectacular day for baseball

The 2011 Big East-Big Ten Baseball Challenge is in full swing, and fans from schools in both conferences are lapping up all the baseball and sunshine the state can offer. Saturday started off with a triple header at Jack Russell Stadium and ended with a nightcap at Bright House Field. In between there was a whole lot of baseball played in Clearwater on Saturday, and many fans of the participating teams made the pilgrimage to Pinellas County from all points on the map. “We left the ice castles of Greenwich (Connecticut) for the gorgeous Florida sunshine,” said Dani Mazzilli, mother of UConn infielder LJ Mazzilli, at Jack Russell Stadium. Diamond Classic Baseball Tournament Helps Two Clearwater Teams Prepare for the Regular Season

The preseason event, hosted by Clearwater Central Catholic, provides a competitive platform to kick start the season.

With basketball and soccer playoffs in full swing throughout the area, and the weather of late leaning more towards nor’ eastern than true southern, it’s difficult to remember that spring is right around the corner. But this weekend, at Clearwater Central Catholic’s Marauders Field, it got a little easier to imagine days full of warm temperatures, green grass and watching games played on a diamond, not a court or a field. The Diamond Classic preseason tournament is the brainchild of longtime CCC Coach Todd Vaughan.
