Numerous Chick-fil-A restaurants in Pinellas and Pasco counties participated in a fundraiser on May 8 to benefit Ireland Nugent, 2, who was severely injured in a lawn mower accident.
We'd like to give a "Patch on the back" to our local Chick-fil-A restaurants, which donated $2,776.37 to the Ireland Nugent fund. Ireland Nugent is the Palm Harbor 2-year-old whose ankles were severed in a lawn mower accident at her home last month. She was recently released from the hospital. Numerous Chick-fil-A restaurants in Pinellas and Pasco counties participated in the fundraiser on May 8. Customers who dined at the restaurants wrote "Ireland" on the back of their receipts and a portion of the sales were donated to a fund for Ireland. The reading and math scores are in for Pinellas County. Here's how kids in Clearwater schools did compared to the county as a whole.
More than 70 percent of Davis Elementary third-graders read at or above their grade level, according to FCAT results released Friday. And more than 70 percent of third-grade students at Plato Acadmy Charter scored at or above their grade level in math on the FCAT. The third-graders not only posted the best FCAT scores in Clearwater, they also outpaced peers across Pinellas County and the state as a whole. More than half of Pinellas County's third-graders read at or above grade level – at 56 percent. They were just one percentage point behind Florida third-graders as a whole, according to results. Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies are focusing on the roads and waterways looking for impaired drivers and boaters over Memorial Day weekend. Deputies are stepping up enforcement efforts between Friday, May 24, and midnight Monday, May 27, to reduce injuries and deaths associated with holiday traffic and boating crashes in Pinellas County, according to a sheriff's news release. The sheriff's marine and environmental lands deputies are loaning life jackets to to children at various locations throughout the county and checking boat safety equipment inspections on all vessels stopped over the weekend. A man in his 20s wore a silver wig as he made off with cash from a Fort Harrison Avenue bank Friday morning, according to Clearwater Police.
A man wearing a silver wig robbed a Clearwater bank Friday morning, according to police. There was no sign of a weapon on the man, who entered First United Bank, 1465 S. Fort Harrison Ave., around 10:40 a.m. and handed a bank teller a note demanding money, Clearwater Police said. The man was given "an undetermined amount of money" and fled southbound toward Belleair, a police spokesperson said. A search by police K-9s turned up empty. The suspect is described as being in his late 20s, about 5-foot-10 with a thin build and clean shaven. He was wearing a yellow polo shirt, tan cargo pants, black gloves and a silver wig, police said. Mackeral Shay Crocker, 20, admitted to the shooting that left one man dead and his wife injured, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
A Clearwater man has been charged with first degree murder in connection with a 2012 double shooting in the Lealman area, authorities said Thursday night. Mackeral Shay Crocker, 20, who had been living at Express Inn & Suites, 11333 U.S. 19 N., admitted to the shooting, detectives said. He was taken to the Pinellas County Jail without incident, where he was being held without bond. David J. Paonessa, 58, and his wife, 66-year-old Jane Bryant, were found shot in their home in the 2500 block of 68th Avenue North on Nov. 7, 2012. Paonessa died at a local hospital; his wife survived.
