$1,000 of Donations Come In After HEP Theft

Community members donated a weed whacker, cash and gift cards to help replace garden equipment stolen from Homeless Emergency Project.

Community members rallied to help the Homeless Emergency Project through donations to help replace gardening equipment stolen recently.

Residents donations include a weed whacker, $350 in cash and a $100 gift card to Home Depot, said Jackie Dryden, director of development at the shelter.

“We probably received about $1,000 of support,” she said.

Thieves cut a metal lock, broke into a storage building and stole about $550 worth of gardening equipment Sept. 26.

Suspects took a weed whacker and battery-operated backpack garden sprayer that are used by residents to maintain the community garden at the shelter.

The 3,000 square foot community garden on the north end of the shelter's North Greenwood campus is a gathering space for single residents and families.
