So as a sign that summer is not that far away, the Threshers open their 2012 season Thursday night with a road game at Dunedin but for seven of the next eight days, the Threshers will have home game against Dunedin, Tampa and Lakeland with the home opener Friday night against Dunedin.
Part of the reason for the popularity is the games are very inexpensive. Part of the reason for the popularity is that Bright House Field is one of the best stadiums in baseball. Parts of the popularity are the many family-friendly activates (like fireworks after each Saturday night game). Another reason for the popularity is to see some of the stars of baseball before they are stars.
The Threshers, a long-time affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, are still in the process of assigning players to minor league teams. The Phillies can afford to be patient in filling out the Clearwater roster since the minor league and spring training headquarters are based out of Bright House Field.
Of the players that have been assigned to the Threshers, right-handed pitcher Brody Colvin jumps out. Ranked by Baseball America as the Phillies eighth-best prospect, he finished last year with the Threshers but seemed to struggle jumping up from low-Class A Lakewood.
Joining Colvin as a leftover Threshers pitcher from last season is Jordan Whatcott, who pitched well with a 4-1 record and a 2.57 ERA.
Top returning hitter (thus far) is Brandon Tripp. In 42 games with Clearwater in 2011, Tripp hit .322 with 20 RBIs.
One of the great appeals of minor league baseball is the promotions and the Threshers are no different. Some of the weekly promotions this season are:
$12 brunch which includes game ticket, club seating and buffet.
Feeding frenzy: All you can eat for $12 which including game ticket.
$1 Tuesdays. All the following items are $1: ticket, hot dogs, beers, soft drinks, popcorn, peanuts, and ice cream sandwiches.
Thirsty Thursdays: All drinks are buy one, get one free. Postgame music at the left field tiki bar.
With a coupon from the Tampa Bay Times, four field box seats, four hot dogs, four sodas, four bags of chips for $25.
