The contest initially pitted 64 Minor League Baseball mascots in online voting brackets. Voters can cast a ballot 25 times each round using a single email address. Phinley as winner.

He nixed Gnate the Gnat, of the Savannah Sand Gnats, an affiliate of the New York Mets. He also beat Wool E. Bull of the Durham Bulls. Before that he , and , of the Carolina Mudcats.

After this, Phinley would have to make it through one more round of voting before he can be crowned best mascot June 19.
