Phanatic Frolics Through Clearwater

Don't worry if you did a double take, that was the Phillie Phanatic riding a "Segway," playing miniature golf, taking a trolley ride, singing along with the band and even getting a key to the city.

Yeah, the Phanatic, one of the most recognizable mascots in sports, has been busy this week taking in some fun and sun around Clearwater.

"This is what makes the Phillie Phanatic such an icon in sports history. He's entertianing, he's exciting, he's thrliling," Mayor George Cretekos said while presenting a key to the city to the Phanatic who was exaggeratingly weeping in joy.

The overweight, feathery, green creature with a circular beak and curly tongue and a name to honor rabid Phillie fans came to life April 25, 1978 born from the Galapagos Islands.

He quickly caught on with fans and has been a staple at Citizens Bank Park and the Veterans Stadium before that.

"Phanatic great season, relax a little bit here in Clearwater before you get to work," Cretekos said before getting a beakful of a kiss and feathery hug.
