How Clearwater Third-Graders Did on the FCAT

The reading and math scores are in for Pinellas County. Here's how kids in Clearwater schools did compared to the county as a whole.

More than 70 percent of Davis Elementary third-graders read at or above their grade level, according to FCAT results released Friday.

And more than 70 percent of third-grade students at Plato Acadmy Charter scored at or above their grade level in math on the FCAT.

The third-graders not only posted the best FCAT scores in Clearwater, they also outpaced peers across Pinellas County and the state as a whole.

More than half of Pinellas County's third-graders read at or above grade level – at 56 percent. They were just one percentage point behind Florida third-graders as a whole, according to results.

Only 48 percent of the district's third-graders scored at or above grade level on the math portion of the FCAT, lagging 10 points behind their peers across the state.

Here is a look at the percentage of third-graders scoring at or above grade level in reading and math in Clearwater elementary schools:

  • Leila G. Davis Elementary School: 71 percent reading; 60 percent math;
  • Belcher Elementary: 50 percent reading; 51 percent math;
  • Plumb Elementary: 63 percent in reading; 61 percent in math;
  • Eisenhower Elementary School: 44 percent reading; 46 percent math;
  • Sandy Lane Elementary: 22 percent reading; 26 percent in math;
  • Skycrest Elementary: 38 percent reading; 28 percent in math;
  • McMullen-Booth Elementary: 51 percent reading; 53 percent in math;
  • Plato Academy Charter: 69 percent reading; 72 percent in math;
  • Ponce de Leon Elementary School: 29 percent reading; 26 percent math.

Scoring on the third-grade FCAT is numbered from 1 to 5, with 3 the minimum for students to be considered at grade level. Students who score "1" are at risk of being held back.

In Pinellas schools:

  • 17 percent scored a "1" in reading;
  • 24 percent scored a "1" in math.

Florida’s passage rates have dropped after exams were changed and a more rigorous scoring system implemented.

Teacher evaluations are partially based on students’ FCAT scores.

School letter grades are set to be released in July,

Students’ individual FCAT results will be distributed to parents by schools later.
