Are Mitt Romney's Tax Returns Fair Game?

Amid calls for Mitt Romney to reveal more financial information, should presidential candidates be required to disclose their income tax returns?

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has released his 2010 tax return and an estimate of his 2011 return, but for some critics, that's not enough.

From a recent Washington Post editorial to President Barack Obama's campaign ads, the calls for Romney to reveal more of his financial information have gotten louder as the campaign season continues.

Presidential candidates aren't required to disclose their tax returns, as Reuters points out, although it's become common practice. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have released tax returns dating back to 2000, and Romney's father, George, released 12 years of returns when he ran for president back in 1968.

What's your take?

Should Romney and other presidential candidates be forced to release their tax returns?

Is this information too personal, or too important for voters to be kept private?

DOW down 170, 3rd triple loss day in a row. Nero fiddles while Rome burns, and the Romans worry about tax returns while the empire crumbles around them.......
Libby July 24, 2012 at 07:36 PM
Mr. Romney is a financial manipulator NOT a businessman.
Libby July 24, 2012 at 07:40 PM
Obama is the embodiment of the American Dream and Republicans just can't stand to have a man of color achieving what they consider to be only their brthright.
Libby July 24, 2012 at 07:41 PM
Must be nice to only worry about the stock market - troubles of the idle rich.

God help us if this is how he thinks he should run our Country: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/23/bain-capital-layoffs-dade-behring_n_1695960.html

It's funny to read information about what people "heard" and not what they actually know. In the financial world, Bain Capital is an A+ rating. Obama's Green Jobs - taxpayer-paid investments are............ need we guess? Obama's co-horts & DNC chair, also have CHOSEN off-shore accounts. (Hypocrites is the word that comes to mind)
Pete Kontakos July 24, 2012 at 08:09 PM
No need to hide then right?
Michael D. July 24, 2012 at 08:18 PM
I don't believe any is agruing the profitability of Bain Capital. They did what they are supposed to do, which is make their investors profit. And like the whole Green market it has been hit and miss. The problem the misses are all over the news. The hits, I bet you can't name one. But you should be able to being that its right here in Florida and doing extremely well. When you invest in new technology you are going to hit and miss. The modern Hybrid car took over 20 years to latch on to the little bit of market it currently has. As far as offshore accounts, all smart money makers have offshore accounts. But the offshore accounts do go against Romney's I keep my money in the USA unlike the current president statement. Which he made more than once. The problem isn't where the money is, it's that he shouldn't have made that statement if it wasn't true.
Peter on Riverview Blvd. July 24, 2012 at 08:18 PM
Romney is not hiding. The ignorant liberals "call it hiding". That does not make it so. Funny how liberals "believe what they think", and not want to know what is a fact.
Michael D. July 24, 2012 at 08:29 PM
Pete, So I guess it was the ignorant conservates that would "call it hiding" in 2004 when they were asking the same thing of Kerry? Both sides "believe what they think" just depends if you agree with the agrument or not. As I posted above the same game was played by conservative in 2004 over Kerry's tax returns. And just like this time, the facts are never the issue.
Pete Kontakos July 24, 2012 at 08:35 PM
He is not making them available, not hiding. I know semantics is everything with "you people"...LOL...Mike never did I say conservatives were ignorant, in fact the reverse is true see how quickly Peter launched the salvo because I have my opinion...I did not vote for Kerry so Yeah he should have turned his in too! Facts are always the issue, just some people refuse to look at them.
Michael D. July 24, 2012 at 08:42 PM
Facts are not the issue in the agrument. Facts are always what is important. But just like FOX NEWS and CNBC facts get in the way of a good story. For me facts of all candidates, not just these two will be deciding factor.
Peter on Riverview Blvd. July 24, 2012 at 08:45 PM
Obama's Chevy Volt...... $250,000.00 actual cost per car. The 400lb battery assy. is made in Korea. Liberals are not ignorant.... they only make ignorant statements. The self-described Communist, Van Jones was Obama's chosen Green Energy Jobs Zar (sp?). Green energy hit or miss???? You've got to be kidding. Romney has disclosed the REQUIRED tax statements. Argument over.
Pete Kontakos July 24, 2012 at 08:48 PM
Argument is over when the people who are voting decide its a non issue. Pretty big chance to take, but its his campaign and he can do what he wants. Why is Bain an issue anyway, why is he not running on his record as a Governor anyway?
Peter on Riverview Blvd. July 24, 2012 at 08:58 PM
Geeeze....... Romney disclosed the REQUIRED tax statements. It's the Obama "transparent" people who are CREATING an issue. On your silly question..... WHY ISN'T OBAMA RUNNING ON HIS RECORD AS PRESIDENT?? WHY ISN'T OBAMA DISCLOSING HIS COLLEGE / UNIVERSITY RECORD, as all Presidents before him have?? Back to the discussion....... Romney has disclosed the required tax statements. THAT argument should be over.
Michael D. July 24, 2012 at 08:59 PM
Peter, There is a beautiful thing called the Freedom of Information Act. It is hit and miss, but you only know the misses. I guess you only want the misses. And like any technology sometimes you have to take a loss on the initial production. The Solar Power plants that are powering entire cities as testing, not important I'm sure. Already being used to supply surrounding areas in the state of Florida... OOOH hang on, did I state of Florida, why yes I did. And the Volt which was orginally a $250,000 in R&D model, but it only costs $40,000 per vehicle to manufacture (fact). That is before any government assistance. I have no problem with the battery assembly being manufactured in Korea, and I know Romney would agree to that as well. One thing that makes business sense is to send some basic manufacturing jobs over to other countries, we are a service based economy here in the United States. Next time fact check. Thank you.
Pete Kontakos July 24, 2012 at 09:02 PM
It is, the argument on how it will affect his chances isn't... and it's Czar.....
Pete Kontakos July 24, 2012 at 09:05 PM
Mike, when did I say anything about the Volt, Korea or cost? Are you seeing things? All I am talking about is how/if the resistance to revealing his taxes will hurt his chances, apparently we cannot answer just yes and no we have to redirect and deflect...Oh speaking of austerity(hows that for random)http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/public-sector-austerity-in-one-graph/2012/06/11/gJQAv89NVV_blog.html
Michael D. July 24, 2012 at 09:10 PM
Peter mentioned it. Not you. I apologize for the missrepresentation.
Pete Kontakos July 24, 2012 at 09:13 PM
Oh, the name..I got it! :) No harm no foul. Been a pleasure chatting with you Mike, have a great day.
Jeffrey Lambrix July 24, 2012 at 11:39 PM
Why 10? Obama only showed 8 when he ran>
Sharon Short July 28, 2012 at 10:46 PM
Exactly right! The tax returns are a smoke screen. They are both rich men..unfortunately it takes money to run for President in the US. I am a registered Democrat but I cast my vote for the "person" not a particular Party. I am more concerned about what the candidates will do for America than I am about their tax returns.
B.W.Venables July 30, 2012 at 10:48 AM
We should expect to see complete background records for BOTH candidates...from complete birth records, adoption records, divorce records, all elementary school through college records, and records involving any business dealings. You have to have a lot of that information just to get a drivers license in Florida.

Maybe Mittens can ship your job overseas, then You won't have any taxes to pay either! Just think, with all the jobs outsourced, who will pay taxes then? Maybe they will build the masses some nice tent cities to live in after they foreclose of our homes. Maybe with the pesky social net gone medical bills should gobble up the savings the retired have(more homes to rent)then a lack of medical treatment should wipe out the remaining "free-loaders" and with these bums gone the "real" Americans will have so much more room to play in with and ride their dressage horses. Some will still have jobs as grooms, butlers, groundsmen, house cleaners, gardeners, all will be required on the new opulent estates. But they better work fast Mittens likes to fire people. Is it a big deal to make Mittens President-for-life?
Red August 13, 2012 at 03:10 PM
What tax returns? He's scared of the effect of someone like himself being known as a tax avoider that pays less taxes than a carpenter or secretary will cost him the election. He's right , encourage him to keep hiding the truth.
Peter on Riverview Blvd. August 13, 2012 at 09:05 PM
Oh, brother..... has ANYONE noticed????? A liberal just wants to argue..... Liberals don't make an argument. As I read some of these posts..... it is so stupid to TRY to have an INTELLIGENT argument with a liberal. Liberals:..... If you stick to REAL FACTS, and not your "global warming" style , stupidity with an issue, maybe a discussion can happen. (Mit Romney).... NEVER sent jobs overseas. (Mit Romney).... Has not reneged on his taxes. Now,.... you liberals...... Look for FACTS.... not accusations, created by lib-liers. Liberals.... Why don't YOU want to know the truth?
Peter on Riverview Blvd. August 13, 2012 at 09:06 PM
(I can't wait to read the liberal response)....... You guys are so predictable.... :)
B.W.Venables August 13, 2012 at 11:19 PM
I bet that the employees of Steel Dynamics and Staples would beg to differ with you about that...Bain start up companies currently employing thousands...Got anything similar to show from Mr. Obama?
Bryan Gifford August 13, 2012 at 11:39 PM
BW, Obama put in place programs that enabled me to keep my home, after the 2007 crash that took 40% of my income with it. Romney would have had me out on the street, homeless and struggling to care for my family. Obama will always have our support.
Cisco August 14, 2012 at 12:08 AM
Sure they are. However, there are so many things that Obama has been hiding I do not care about the tax returns. The whole thing is just a distraction anyway.
