Police: Teen Surprises Armed Burglars at Her Home

The incident could be related to a string of burglaries that took place on Friday, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

A teenage girl surprised a group of gun-toting burglars in her Glenwood Estates home in Clearwater on Friday afternoon.

The 15-year-old arrived home on Ridgewood Street at around 3 or 3:30 in the afternoon and noticed that a closet door was open, Clearwater Police said. She told investigators that the door is normally closed.

After hearing noises coming from the second floor of the home, the teen looked up the stairs and saw the barrel of a handgun, she told media after the incident.

At the same time, she said that she heard a gunshot and ran out of the home and to a neighbor's house, according to the police report.

The neighbor called Clearwater Police, who set up a perimeter and located one of the suspects. Investigators said they believe two other suspects are still at large, and they are working to identify them.

Police also are working with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office to determine if this incident is related to two other burglaries that took place on Friday.

Clearwater Patch will have more details as they become available.
