UPDATE: Man Opens Fire in Office Lobby, Shoots Self, Police say

The suspect entered the lobby of an office complex on Lightwave Drive in Clearwater, began shooting at the lobby doors and windows, then shot himself in the abdomen, Largo Police said.

Police have identified the man who they say fired several rounds at the windows and doors of a Largo office building lobby Wednesday morning, then shot himself in the abdomen in an apparent suicide attempt.

According to Largo Police, Fred Michael Sumner, 52, entered the lobby of the BayView Pavillion Office Business Complex, 1550 Lighwave Dr., just before 9:30 a.m., pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and begin firing at the windows and doors.

"He did not aim or threaten anyone in the lobby area," Largo Police Lt. Mike Loux said in a media release. "After firing several rounds at the windows and doors, he fired a single shot into his own abdomen area."

Sumner was flown by helicopter to an area hospital, where he is alive and under arrest, Loux said. He is charged with criminal mischief and shooting within an occupied building.

Sumner's wife works for a business at the complex but was not present during the incident, according to police. She has been located and is uninjured, Loux said.

Police initially indicated the shooting occurred at Clarity Services, a business inside the complex, but later clarified that 911 calls came from Clarity.

Police are on the scene of a Clearwater area office building where they say a man opened fire in the lobby, then turned the gun on himself.

The suspect, described as a man in his 50s, entered Clarity Services, 15550 Lightwave Dr., Largo, just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and began shooting at the lobby doors and windows, Largo Police spokesperson Lt. Mike Loux said. Police say they don't believe the man was shooting at any people.

The man then shot himself in the abdomen, Loux said. He was transported to a local hospital by Bayflite helicopter. No other injuries were reported.

Police are still investigating.
