Pedestrian Killed Crossing Missouri Avenue

A 57-year-old man was struck Saturday night just south of Turner Street and later died, according to Clearwater Police.

A pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday night as he tried to cross Missouri Avenue in Clearwater, authorities said.

The 57-year-old man was attempting to cross Missouri just south of Turner Street around 7:42 p.m., according to Clearwater Police, when he was hit by a 2006 Toyota van headed southbound on Missouri.

The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to
Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said. His identity has not yet been released, as authorities are trying to notify relatives who live out of state.

The van's driver, 32-year-old Andrew Philip Drake, of Clearwater, told detectives he saw the pedestrian in the roadway but that he was unable to avoid hitting him, according to public safety spokesperson Elizabeth Watts.

Drake was not injured.
