Man Dies in Scooter Crash on SR 580

Gordon Haboush, 57, was not wearing a helmet when he crashed his scooter Sunday morning, according to investigators.

A Dunedin man died following a crash at the intersection of State Road 580 and Belcher Road Sunday.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, Gordon Haboush was traveling northbound on Belcher Road approaching State Road 580 when he began driving through stopped vehicles on his scooter at 10:38 a.m.

Haboush, authorities said, then traveled between the curb lane and the right turn only lane, pulling into the path of an oncoming 1996 Jeep Cherokee.

Deputies said Haboush, 57, was hit and then trapped under the Jeep. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured.

The sheriff's office said Haboush was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

State Road 580 was shut down for more than four hours Sunday because of the crash.
