Police: First-Grader Culprit of 911 Hoax Call at Belleair Elementary

Police say the child made nine hoax phone calls including the active shooter call that locked down Belleair Elementary.

Clearwater Police have identified a 7-year-old first-grade student as the culprit of a hoax 911 call Tuesday that temporarily put Belleair Elementary School on lockdown.

According to police, the 911 caller told police about a gun and shots fired at the school. After investigating, police determined it was a hoax.

On Feb. 27, the juvenile also called 911 to report a deceased person in the roadway, police said.

This was also determined to be a hoax. Detectives located the juvenile and he confessed to making a total of nine hoax phone calls prior to and following the active shooter call.

The majority of the calls were nondescript, and only two generated a police response (active shooter and body in the road), police said.

Police said the juvenile was released to a parent and charges of misuse of 911 have been referred to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office.
