Updated, 11:45 a.m.: The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical, according to Clearwater public safety spokesperson Elizabeth Watts. The damage estimate is at $35,000.
No injuries were reported after firefighters extinguished a blaze Tuesday morning at a Clearwater Beach motel that damaged at least one of the units.
Clearwater Fire & Rescue was called to the Surf & Sand Motel, 50 Royal Way, at 7:21 a.m. When firefighters arrived they found smoke and flames shooting through the second-story window of unit No. 8, officials said in a media release.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to that unit, although the unit directly below it sustained some water damage and the units to the side sustained minor smoke damage, officials said.
A woman who had been living in unit No. 8 was already out when firefighters arrived, and she refused medical treatment. The Red Cross was contact to assist after she was displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said, and an estimate of the damage is not yet available.
