DUI Detail Planned for New Year's Weekend

Clearwater Police will be on the lookout for impaired drivers over New Year's weekend, according to a news release.

From the release:

"The Clearwater Police Department Traffic Enforcement Team and other assigned officers will be looking for impaired drivers this New Year's holiday weekend. Drinking impairs your abilities to maneuver and react while driving a vehicle, therefore, increasing your chances of being involved in a crash. 

"According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), during December 2009, there were 753 people killed in crashes that involved drivers or motorcycle riders with blood alcohol level of .08 or higher. If that's not deterrent enough, consider the penalties for a first DUI conviction:

• Fine - $250 to $500 
• Community Service - 50 Hours 
• Probation - up to 1 Year 
• Imprisonment - Up to 6 Months 
• Imprisonment with BAL of .08 or higher with a minor in the vehicle -  Up to 9 months
• License Revocation - Minimum of 180 days 
• DUI School - 12 Hours  

"Below are a few things to remember to help keep you holiday happy and safe:

• Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin
• Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home 
• If you're impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation
• If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, immediately contact your local law enforcement
• If you know someone who is about to drive or ride with a driver who is impaired, take the driver's keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.
