Does Clearwater Need a Big Hug?

Clearwater is no stranger to all sorts of crime. But it's also filled with folks who care about their community. Enter Group Hug Clearwater.

Road rage. Armed robbery. Police standoff at a Clearwater motel.

These crime activities were reported just this week in Clearwater.

What's the answer to these societal problems? A hug. A group hug.

Welcome, Group Hug Clearwater. This new, glass-half-full group is encouraging people to be nice. It's that simple.

You don't have to hug a person either. "HUG your favorite palm tree, restaurant, library, aquarium, etc.," according to Group Hug Clearwater's Facebook Page.

This old-fashioned concept may be just what Clearwater needs. What do you think of the idea?

The Facebook page of Group Hug Clearwater encourages folks to upload and post their group hug photos.

This is a "celebration of the people, places, and things that make Clearwater great," according to Group Hug Clearwater. "By hugging them. Literally. "

The promotion is being sponsored by www.canvaszoo.com. Similar group hugs have been sponsored elsewhere in the U.S. and world.

I think all Pinellas County should be glad about the high standard that Clearwater sets for the rest of it. In my opinion, everyplace else around here is judged compared to Clearwater. The area on the opposite end around Pass-A-Grill, and across the new By-Way Bridge, Fort Desoto, and the Skyway. etc...(and don't forget Gulfport), are the ''only'' area that has a chance to ever exceed the appeal of Clearwater. Clearwater even has it's own pocket of high crime just as South St Pete has...so I'd say the playing field is even as far as that obstacle goes. Once the new By-Way is completed...it may stimulate wide change in that entire area and bring it all together as one...and then present a package that is more even with Clearwater. The potential in the south area , as mentioned, has more to offer than Clearwater...but Clearwater's City Planning is obviously one to be envied by the surrounding Pinellas County Cities.

Are you serious? Clearwater is infested with crime more than most towns and pretty equivalent to South St Pete. Maybe not North North Clwr but the rest is a joke. Filled with homeless and bad crimes all the time. Drive some of the areas and see how horrible they look and the town does not enforce codes and clean up very well. Disgusting drug and thug infested town.

It will take more than a hug to make that town a safe and pretty place.

Uh...didn't I say the same thing in part of my comment? Maybe you missed it. That said, Clearwater is still the nicest place in the entire area...and that includes "all" of Pinellas County and Hillsborough Country as well. Yes I ''am'' serious. No way does the crime area of Clearwater compare to South St pete...no way. I am fully aware of the bad parts of Clearwater, but they are not as bad ..and certainly do not cover nearly as large of an area as the bad pars that South St Pete does.

Frankly, it sounds like you simply hate living here in Florida...because comparatively speaking ...all of Pinellas County is among the best in the entire state. If you are that unhappy here ,you should move some place that is colder...because the weather is why most of us live here. Move to Kansas, and write us in a couple years and tell us how that worked out for you...OK? Write us in January...that would be a good time to here from you...lol.

Who said anything about the weather? I am only unhappy with Clearwater and the Thugs, Drugs, Crime, etc in the heart of Clwr. Clearwater needs to follow Palm Harbor, Bellaire, Ozona, Safety Harbor, Dunedin, Etc etc. Other towns to follow Clearwater? Only if they want to have the heart of their town to be invested with Homeless, Thugs, Drugs, and Crime. Where you got any negativity about the weather it beyond me. Yes weather is awesome but same weather in south St. Pete. Again, it would take more than HUG Clwr to make the once beautiful town safe and beautiful again.

My comment was not "that" hard to relate the topic per your comment,,,it's candidly meant sarcasm was over your head, I guess. The point still remains....Clearwater is the main draw to Pinellas, Pasco, and Hillsbourough Counties...then when people get here....they see indeed that Clearwater is pretty nice. If they spend any significant time in the area, they soon realize that while Clearwater has a lot going for it...so do many other nearby areas along the beach, as you mentioned. To see bad civil conditions outside main better kept areas is nothing new in virtually any vacation like city...but it is certainly true n Florida. Even in Hawaii...places the tourists go are seemingly paradise...but if you venture off the beaten path...you soon realize that crime ridden areas abound. One thing that is interesting about a lot of the crime rich areas of Clearwater is that is you look close at zoning, you will see that a lot of the bad area with bad house is actually zoned commercial. I am not sure what the plans are, but that fact may be what helps to better rid the area of blight. When they do it, who knows...but the housing and business economy is far from recovered. I do agree, though...that Clearwater has some unsafe pockets of high crime. Welcome to Florida. It's can be like visiting someone who has one dog that licks you in the face with love, but they have another dog who will bite your hand off.
