Fun events at Brooker Creek!

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. each Thursday in August, youngsters continue to be treated to the ever-popular Book Time at Brooker. For 45 minutes, tots ages 3 to 5 have the opportunity to connect to the wonders of the natural world through stories and crafts, games or other hands-on activities.

For the adult readers, the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve continues hosting a one-hour Brooker Book Club monthly beginning at 9:30 a.m. Books selected include works by Florida authors, past and present, with archaeology, biography, politics and history storylines. The book to be discussed on Saturday, Aug. 3, is Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida by Gary R. Mormino. As seating is limited advance registration is suggested.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, 17, 24 and 31 hikers see how the land has changed over time and the ecological footprints left by those changes on a 0.75 mile walk. Closed-toe shoes, water and hat recommended on this 90-minute hike beginning at 9 a.m. Best for ages 6 and older. Advance registration required.

Join a Brooker Creek naturalist on Friday, Aug. 9, for a botany hike to explore the fascinating plants found on the preserve while identifying wildflowers, ferns, epiphytes, trees and more. The ecology of various plant communities will also be examined. This two-hour hike, best suited for adults, begins at 9 a.m. Come prepared with a camera and questions. Please register in advance.

On Saturday, Aug. 10, bird lovers will enjoy this 8 to 10:30 a.m. hike to identify common birds of Brooker Creek Preserve. Meander along the one-mile trail to gather information on the birds seen and heard. Binoculars will be helpful. Bring water

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, UF/IFAS Natural Resources Extension Agent Lara Miller will introduce a relatively new resident to Pinellas County, the coyote. Lara will explore the life history of the coyote as well as its ability to adapt and survive in urban environments during this 90-minute presentation. It is not rare to see a coyote in Pinellas. Come and learn about this nocturnal creature and its presence in the area. Advance registration required for this free program.

What makes the swordfish the fastest fish in the sea? Why do barracuda have sharp teeth? On Saturday, Aug. 24, during Going Coastal – Fish Form and Function UF/IFAS Pinellas County Sea Grant Extension Agent Libby Carnahan will present the relationship between fish form and function. Bring a blank t-shirt, reusable bag, or item of your choice to use for fish printing following the lesson. This 10:30 a.m. to noon session is suitable for all ages.

Join the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve’s wildflower garden club on Saturday, Aug. 31, to get gardening hands dirty in the preserve’s wildflower garden. Bring garden gloves and hat. Morning snacks are usually provided during this two-hour session beginning at 8 a.m. Free; advance registration required.

Brooker Creek Preserve protects more than 8,700 acres of natural ecosystems and is located at 3940 Keystone Road in Tarpon Springs. The preserve, the horse trails and the Friends Trail are open daily and holidays.
