What Do You Think of a New Rays Stadium in Mid-Pinellas County?

We want to know if you would be more likely to attend a Tampa Bay Rays game at a proposed location in Carillon Park than Tropicana Field.

A local developer has pitched a plan to build a new stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays at St. Petersburg's Carillon Park, in the Feather Sound area.

The Ulmerton Road location appears to be a shorter commute for Rays fans who live in Hillsborough County and middle and northern Pinellas County.

Old Northeast-Downtown St. Pete Patch reported that Steven Kurcan, project manager with CityScape, says the location of a stadium plays a big factor when it comes to fans attending games. MLB said a stadium has to be within a 30-minute drive of a stadium to be successful, Kurcan explained.

The proposal also includes adding retail, restaurants and entertainment (read the details).

So, what do you think of the Rays moving north to Carillon Park?

First of all, I like Tropicana Field and think it's fine, except for the grass isn't green anymore. The location isn't that far away from me in Clearwater and if it's moved to Feather Sound area then that area will get congested just as St. Pete does. The problem at the Trop is the parking (or lack of and lack of security). I was walking to my car one night after a game and saw a guy looking in vehicles with a flashlight; I assume scoping out which ones to break into. I think any field needs a parking garage very well lit with security patrolling the garage. I don't go alot because I worry about my car getting broke into. I think the Rays have lots of fans, but it isn't easy going to the games during the week when you have to get up and go to work the next morning. The weekends seem to have the stadium full. It's also not easy to afford to take a family when you have to pay to park, pay for the tickets and then pay for the concessions. My husband and I go a few times but it's just me and him, but a whole family with 2 or 3 kids could be very expensive.

I agree with the previous post from Sandra Bray. Parking was inadequate at the Trop from the word go. The proposed Carillon site will not offer better convenience for parking, and it is likely to create conflict for existing businesses and homowners next to it. The ability of that area to attract Hillsborough fans to drive over the bridge was studied and rejected back in the early days when it was called the Toytown site where HSN and the Marriot are now vs. the Gas Plant site where the Trop is now. 30 years later that area is still not good for a baseball stadium, especially after all the Feathersound and Carilon development that is now there.
