Who Are These 'Boys of Winter'?

Sixty games a year of modified fast pitch softball provides exercise, enjoyment, and fast-paced competition to seniors, ages 49 to 74, at North Shore Park in St. Petersburg.

They come from far and wide, men who want to be boys again to relive or revive past athletic glories.

For some it is a completely new athletic experience.  Others are  lifelong athletes, who want to continue to maintain skills, exercise, and enjoy the thrill of competition.

The game of modified fast pitch softball provides all of these opportunities. Many continue what they have done throughout their business and education careers.  They have always been athletic and have played some form of softball/baseball much of their lives into adulthood.

Others were out of the game because their work or family commitments didn’t permit a regular time for recreating. Over time, their skills return them to top form.

With the age requirement of 49-74, the Half-Century Softball Club (HCSC) usually numbers 50-55 members.  Currently the competitive format is a four team “league,” although the configuration in some years has included six teams.

An eight member Board of Directors administers the club through a constitution, by-laws, and playing rules.  This not your Parks and Recreation “once-a-week-ten-game- schedule”!

The typical HCSC season has 60 games played every M/W/F between mid-October and the first week of April, with breaks for holidays.

This organizational structure has carried the club into its 80th year.  This is one of the features that makes the club unique and draws players.

Players come from all walks of life.  “The Boys of Winter” hail from 20 states and Canada.  Pennsylvania, New York, and Florida are the leading states of origin.

These “Boys of Winter” have held all manner of career positions, such as Public Policy Analyst, English Teacher, Engineer, College Professor, Printing Plant Manager, Environmental Scientist, Woodworker, Accountant, Broadcaster,  Insurance agent, Electronic Technician, Tool and Die Maker, Respiratory Therapist, Army Analyst, Public School Superintendent, Librarian , Real Estate Agent, Federal employee, Dentist, Coast Guard veteran, Author, Police Captain, Actor,  Firefighter, Radio-TV Broadcasting, Law  Enforcement, and Weapons Defense Specialist.

The age diversity spreads over 25 years. The club’s constitution calls for players who turn age 49 before the season begins. Currently, 22 of the “Boys” range from 53 to 63 years of age.  Thirty-one fall in the 64-74 age bracket, with six members over 74 granted “extended service” as provided in the club’s constitution.  This requires a vote of the club’s membership.

We invite you to visit our North Shore Park field location at the foot of 8th Ave NE in St. Petersburg where our modified fast pitch league games are played M/W/F mornings, starting at 9:45 and 11:15, resuming January 4th, 2013.

New players are always welcomed.  Immediate try-outs are available for men and women, ages 49-74.  Information and applications are available at www.stpetehalfcentury.com .  Persons interested should contact President Joe Hannah (727-420-8102) for additional information.
