Humane Society of Pinellas Evacuates 88 Animals

The animal shelter already moved 88 pets and is expected to be closed through Thursday, according to officials.

The Humane Society of Pinellas has evacuated its pets and is closed to the public through Thursday because of Tropical Storm Isaac.

The , sending 88 adoptable pets to foster homes Saturday and Sunday to keep them out of the storm's path.

“We were so moved by the great outpouring of support from our community," said Twila Cole, spokeswoman for the shelter, in a release. "Our shelter is not in an evacuation zone, but our kennels are outdoors. So many people came out to help keep our pets safe."

The pets are expected to come back to the shelter and be available for adoption Thursday, assuming the weather allows and the shelter does not sustain too much damage.

"We are hoping some of the foster parents will fall in love with the pet and want to adopt permanently,” Cole said.

Not able to foster, but still want to help?

Donations of bleach, paper towels, sheets, blankets and industrial trash bags for cleaning up the facility after the storm can be brought Thursday to the shelter, 3040 State Road 590.
