Friday Evening Farmers Market Starting in Clearwater

The Downtown Clearwater Evening Farmers Market opens Friday, Jan. 4 and is expected to be open the first Friday each month.

When Bob Fernandez started the Downtown Clearwater Farmers Market 18 years ago it was the only one around.

Over time, other markets have sprung up in cities throughout the Tampa Bay area.

"It just caught on a little more," Fernandez said.

Now, farmers market fans can add another day to shop in Clearwater's outdoor ambiance.

Organizers of the Downtown Clearwater Farmers Market which meets Wednesdays, are expanding the market to include the first Friday each month starting Jan. 4.

"We thought there was a need for it," said Fernandez, market manager. "People were asking."

The market will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. through May 3 in the 500 block of Cleveland Street. If it works well they will try the additional day during the fall, Fernandez said.

While the market will offer many of the same items as the Wednesday iteration, there will be some differences, Fernandez said. There will be hummus, a different produce vendor and many new food-related items for sale. Other products available include gifts, pet food products, fresh seafood and gourmet foods.

The market is pet-friendly and handicap accessible. Limited space is available for prospective vendors.

Fernandez said the Wednesday market is gaining steam as more snowbirds are visiting and estimates about 700 people come out weekly.

"Maybe it will be better."
