Beach, Downtown Traffic Expected to Increase Because of RNC

While 50,000 visitors are expected to descend on downtown Tampa as part of the convention from Aug. 27 to 30, Clearwater city officials expect to see an increase in vehicle traffic similar to spring break levels at the beach.

Delegates from Rhode Island, Virginia, New York and 10 other states are expected to take in the sun and the sand as well as politics when they stay in hotels along Clearwater Beach as part of the Republican National Convention.

They are part of 50,000 visitors expected to descend on downtown Tampa as part of the convention from Aug. 27 to 30 and Clearwater city officials expect to see some of those visitor in the form of increased vehicle traffic similar to spring break levels at the beach.

“Although the convention is being held in Tampa, many RNC visitors will be staying in or visiting Clearwater to enjoy our city and beautiful beaches,” according to Elizabeth Watts, public safety spokeswoman, in a release.

Officials expect more vehicle and pedestrian traffic starting Sunday, Aug. 26, on Gulf to Bay Boulevard, the downtown area and throughout Clearwater Beach.

Expect delays if traveling in these areas during the convention.

There are no planned road closures in Clearwater.
