Joey Chestnut Retains Title In Wing Eating With Clearwater Win

Joey Chestnut is the chicken wing eating champion another year. Find out how close the competition was at the Original Hooters on Thursday.

Joey Chestnut devoured 179 wings in 10 minutes to retain his title at the Worldwide Wing-Eating Championship on Thursday in Clearwater.

Chestnut won $6,000 for besting 15 other contestants at the Original Hooters. He downed 144 wings in 10 minutes to win the wing championship last year.

"I knew I was ready for today," Chesnut said. "I don't like to get too cocky. I don't want to let everybody else know I'm ready but it worked out well... and work pays off."

Miki Sudo, an up-and-coming competitor, ate 155 wings for second place. She was considered a favorite after coming into the competition eating 192 wings in a qualifying event.

Sudo, the No. 7 eater in the world, according to Major League Eating, the competitive eating governing body, bested Chestnut in a rib eating contest earlier this year.

That loss fueled Chestnut to victory.

"I really didn't want to let it be close," Chestnut said. "I put in a little bit more work."
