Clearwater – Suncoast Hospice will host New York Times best-selling author Barbara Brown Taylor July 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Suncoast Hospice’s Clearwater community service center, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd. She will discuss her most recent book, Learning to Walk in the Dark. Taylor will also sign copies of her book prior to the program from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
In Learning to Walk in the Dark, Taylor addresses the loss of “light” in our lives and how “darkness” is just as necessary to our well-being as light – how having one without the other is to live only half a life. She explores physical, emotional and spiritual darkness, revealing the beauty to be found there and the life-shaping lessons she learned while enveloped in her own dark periods. In fact, even though conventional wisdom puts forth that light is associated with good and darkness represents evil and danger, Taylor suggests that darkness can be our soul’s best friend, offering us treasures that we cannot otherwise see. Woven into the book’s narrative are elements of history, theology, biology and cosmology.
Taylor is an Episcopal priest and professor of world religion. She was named one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world by Baylor University, and has been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, NPR’s “Fresh Air,” and TIME magazine, among others. She was recently named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People for 2014. She is the author of 13 books.
The program is free but space is limited; call (727) 523-3427 to reserve your seat or for more information. A selection of her current and previous books will be available for purchase courtesy of Barnes & Noble’s Clearwater store.
