Literacy Tutor Workshop & Training (FREE)

Registration is requested at http://www.lcup.net.

As a tutor, your goal would be to help the cause of literacy by providing one-to-one tutoring or small group tutoring of adults who need help with reading and writing, or to new speakers of English.

You will be given all the training you need! An initial six hour, free training workshop (held at St. Petersburg College's Clearwater Campus/ES Building Room 111, Sat, Feb 1 from 10 am to 4 pm) will be followed up with continued training after you are placed with a student. As a tutor, you must attend the workshop and follow-up training in order to be certified.

LCUP asks that you make a commitment for a minimum of one year to your student. This allows you and your student to build a trusting relationship and to see progress. Tutoring twice a week for 90 minutes per session is recommended although this can be changed to meet the student’s needs. Tutors should spend time preparing lessons prior to tutoring sessions.

Qualifications: Tutors must be 18-years-old or more; dependable; prompt, interested in helping others; sensitive to different backgrounds and cultures; respectful of confidentiality; PATIENT; optimistic/positive outlook; and have a good command of the English language and grammar. Computer Literacy is helpful but not required.
