World War I ‘Wall of Honor’ Discovered Under Capitol Theatre Plaster

As crews work to renovate the Capitol Theatre they discovered a nearly 20-foot-tall, painted “Wall of Honor” listing names most likely compiled from Clearwater servicemen during World War I.

The names appear clearly enough through the nearly 100-year-old paint. Rudolph Petree. Newlan C. Plumb. Grover and Aubrey McMullen. John B. Stetson. The powerful and pioneering family names appeared as the plaster was removed inside the Capitol Theatre this week, revealing a "Wall of Honor" listing names of residents who served in various military branches during World War I, according to Clearwater historians. “This was completely unexpected,” said Katie Pedretty, spokeswoman at Ruth Eckerd Hall, who is undertaking the renovation project of the more than 90-year-old theater in partnership with the city. The discovery Tuesday has planners scrambling to figure out a way to preserve and incorporate the nearly 20-foot-tall wall into …

I wonder what would compel someone or something - a company, town planners, etc - to consent to covering this up in the first place? I agree with previous commentary that it is essential to carefully address historic buildings BEFORE razing them in the name of progress.   more ›

Library Gate is on its Way

Work on nearly $127,000 of Main Library entrance improvements is expected to start soon, according to library officials.

The permits are in place and some of the art that could be on display as part of the renovated and gated Main Library entrance is part of the Clearwater's Dolphin pod. The project will get underway after library officials hear back from developers regarding final costs to install the seven-foot tall wrought iron style gate and fence around the entrance to the Main Library as well as other courtyard improvements, said Barbara Pickell, library director, during a February library advisory board meeting. The entrace could also become home to a Clearwater's Dolphin designed in a “Where the Wild Things Are” theme by Cathie Carol Zurich-Wus, Pickell said. Six dolphins were purchased by the Downtown Development Board to help attract people to the …

Film Commission Seeks Condo for Movie Shoot

A local producer is looking for a condo use for a day of shooting for an independent foreign film .

The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Film Commission is seeking suggestions for a condo to use for a day of shooting for an indie film.  See the announced posted below by Pinellas County Economic Development.  A local producer urgently needs a condominium building as a filming location for ONE day.  Send your suggestions to :  info@Filmspc.com The location needs are very specific:  The entry way will be crucial to the scene.  It would easily accommodate the actors and a car without cramping.  The example in the photo is perfect, but building owners and manager are asking an amount that greatly exceeds the budget. The production will pay a location fee and insurance, but the budget is indie-film sized.      This location will be used for one day. …
