Dr. Beach, Stephen P. Leatherman, a coastal expert and professor at Florida International University, routinely rates and ranks the state's top beaches.

He recently gave his 10 favorite Florida beaches that combine sand, surf and a welcoming sense of community, for a USA Today poll.

"Meet 'volleyball heaven' on the Gulf Coast, with 'some of the best girl- and boy-watching I've ever seen' near Pier 60," Leatherman said to USA Today about Clearwater Beach.

But what do you think? What makes Clearwater Beach the Best Florida Beach Town?

John L. Sheldon III said on the Clearwater Patch Facebook page: "Beautiful sunsets, I"m so thankful my vietnam rep. found a nice place off Gulf to bay. Its a very nice place."

After a 40 year absence i have moved back to the beach. i expected a beach full of high rises with little room for us average "guys" I am glad i returned. It is a beautiful mix of the old and the new. the causeway to the beach is fantastic. Excellent little shops and places to eat. Lastly, a "toast" to the memory of the Island House Restaurant, Many fond memories of when i worked there in the late 70ties,

Mr. Kelly
are you serious?

Mr. Kelly can't be serious. Clearwater Beach has become known as "The World's Largest Ashtray." Go ahead, section off a square and count the cigarette butts. Then, multiply your sample by the thousands of square feet of "white sand" and you'll begin to understand how filthy Clearwater Beach really is. When the tide recedes, go check out the line of cigarette butts that demarcate the High Tide line. Parents, definitely DO NOT allow your children to play in the sand on that beach.

Another interesting place to visit is Pier 60. Not on it, but just go underneath to see the low life scum, the homeless, and the gang bangers visiting from Hillsborough County. They actually had to tear down the Rockaway Pier last year because so many people were there night after night camping out.

Parking is insane, and costly. The beachgoers are rude and aggressive, or they think the world should genuflect because they are paying top dollar at one of the new hotels.

Do yourself a favor, and visit one of the other Pinellas County beaches. Or even just go to Sand Key... oh sorry, that's a County beach. Go elsewhere and you'll find that it's less crowded, you can find parking, and you can actually smell the sea air instead of some jerk fouling up your breathing air as he repeatedly breaks the law (unenforced by officer Jenkins et. al.) and leaves his cigarette butt in the sand.
